As for the beetle...it was SUPPOSED to be done by end of summer...DOH!!!
more DELAYS...(IE; boat projects and boating and fishing and camping and not working on beetles etc etc etc)
whats another couple months now....we started THAT beetle project before the kids were born! Now they are 4 and 3 years old.....OUCH
best get back on it...actually not too much more left to do....have motor line bored (main bearing crankshaft hole) --- re wet sand the whole deal since its been sitting, check for new dings! PAINT....install interior and such...all the sub assemblies and parts have been painted and are stored in bins, bubble wrapped....etc...my daughters upper closet has been 100% VW parts from before she was born ahhahahhahahhahahhahaha

Im going nuts now! muhahhahahha

Yikes, I had no idea how sick you are. I love it. The kids are gonna be fixing sink drains at 7 I bet. Re GT-150, wait till you see a free one, shouldn't have to pay for any clunker these days. I've seen plenty. A free Jetflight 1 hour away last month and I didn't do it. Got two Hobie cats to work on this winter so thats it (simple). I am restoring a thompson 21' I/O 8' beam, and i am looking at replacing the transom and stringers. Did you use normal 5/8" ply or pt ply for the transom?

Hi Azonic
funny you should ask because I was going to post this today anyways!

before motor came out I wanted to run it up in the boat, but it had a siezed starter and milky oil.......the boat had at one time 2 to 3 feet of water in it....so Im HOPING it was water that came in through the outside...carb and such...and not from an internal issue CROSSING FINGERS!

well....since the cash flow issue (or lack of it) has come up recently.....
anyways the 302 v8 that came with this boat has milky oil....I decided to STOP ALL WORK on the hull and such until we get the oil pan off the engine, check the cylinders and bearings....check for block cracks (external is good so hafta look internal) and in the mean time work on prjects that dont cost much to complete etc or do honey do stuff

from there if it looks OK...we're replacing the rear main oil seal (leaking) and replacing the oil, clean the plugs, and put in the new starter....the plan calls for testing the motor on the ground (temporary eng stand) we have the harness out of the boat so well hook it all up (guages and all) hoping the oil stays clean and that it runs well....if not we have to find the problem and fix it (leak) mebbe even re ring it and replace bearings as needed etc......cheaper than a new motor!

THEN if that checks out we will replace the impeller in the stringer outdrive, reseal it and strip and paint the outdrive, new fluids etc.......

paint the hull and start re assembling by installing the engine /sterndrive / carpet and seating / etc buy and replace the bad trailer axle and hubs.......

the trailer will get paint and bunks / rollers once the boat is water ready and we can leave it overnight or 2 at the Lake Mead boat harbor ($20 per day) Kinda pricey!

then SELL SELL SELL! for spring! as we have too many boats!

this boat is our LEARN to fully repair a boat...project....we never intended on keeping it...... now we've learned that it isnt really worth it to do SOOOOOO much work on a boat you DONT intend on keeping!
We would love to keep her but really dont have the room or need as we have the SLeekcraft 23' executive about ready for the water.

yeah that was SUPPOSED to be done 4 or 5 years back! amazing how backburner projects can collect dust real fast!

I wanted to wrap up the VW by end of this past summer, but the boats kept us busy elsewhere.........

heck all we have left on the VW is sand it again and re-primer---paint and assemble......all the new parts are waiting and ready.

ON TEMPORARY HOLD for just a LITTLE longer! promise!

waiting for a bit warmer weather so we can use automotive paints on the top half....boat paint on the bottom 1/2 and do final assembly!

Well with the weather getting warmer we will be painting the NEWMAN boat VERY SOOOOOON! it has been super windy and dusty here in Las vegas...
for sure this boat will be FINISHED in 60 days or less as we have to allow for a month to sell it.....then we will be MOVINZG out of here after 18 years ...on to a bigger and better part of town!

Better schools for my girls! age 4 and 5

ps SOON as we do ANYTHING Ill post pics and info!

I can't wait to see it painted. I have been wanting to see this boat finished ever since you posted up about it.

yeah now that the weather here is warmer we can PAINT...
we pretty much finished up the JEZEBEL project and a few other projects...the NEWMAN is next in line! (between days spent on the lake on Jezebel ofcourse)

I will keep everyone posted when we restart this project...shouldnt be too much longer......

STARTING to work on the old NEWMAN boat project....drained the omc/ford 302 oil pan 5 quarts of pure water! a cup of mixed foam...then straight dark oil WHEW it is most likely from when the stringer drive gianormo rubber boot tore while it was in a lake back in missouri or wherever.....
cylinders look good and clean metal inside no rust! (pulled the plugs pretty clean! the tops of the pistons had a little carbon (thats a good thing!) if they were clean as a whistle either the engine is new or water intrusion such as a blowed head gasket etc or gas washing em clean for you who dont know about motors too much....

no foamy oil or nothing under the valve covers (good good good)
anyways...sprayed some WD40 in each cylinder...added a 1/2 quart marvel myster oil to each valve cover filler hole...later this week we will overhaul the carb and ground bench test the motor...check her out before install.....

letting it drain into a pan for an hour...will fill/run/drain/fill run and see how clean it stays...HOPE HOPE HOPE

will post some pics in a little bit! will keep this project up to date as we work on it... we've been having way too much fun in our sleekcraft boat to mess with the NEWMAN...but IT WILL BE FINISHED VERY SOON! I assure you doubters!

Jeremy! DOH!!!!!! yeah you aint kidding......... is NEVER AGAIN a statement or what? I wont do it........ lol the Chrysler was one thing but these old stringer drives...uuhg...Im not looking fwd to puttin gthe impeller in it, fluid, reseal etc....hope it all works when I get her back together!

ok here's the pics
now this is PURE WATER 5 quarts of it came out...

here is the oil after draining one pan of pure water...finally got some cream, then some chocolate!
MMMMM good!

heres the oil filler..

here she is as she has sat for 6 months or more...DOH! took me 6 hours of cleaning in 115 degree heat to get the garage respectable enough to see the engine again lol

ok you cant see it but there used to be greasy water line marks on the engine...it was mostly completely underwater at some poiint and time telling from the lines on the exterior...we washed it clean 6 months back...so ya cant see em anymore

judging from the scale and buildup on the exterior drive inside where the tilt area is, I wouold say this boat was in water at some time and sunk a bit...especially considering the stringers were all rotten and the floor rotten.... and inside the boat we did see a high water line...figure she sank 1/2 way in the back 3-4 ft deep...or mebbe it just RAINED ALOT! sure wasnt here in Vegas! we havent seen rain for 7 months..even then it was s sprinkle

hey you guys CHECK OUT THE ENGINE VIDEO!
we got the V8 running! on the ground! drained 5 quarts water, and 4 to 5 qts water....

she runs AWSOME! and I didn't even rebuild the carB! little bit of lifter tap for about a minute, once they pumped up it ran like a top!

ok...today was kinda lazy day...had some work to do and made a few bucks YEA!

cleaned out the Newman ...had lots of misc junk piled in it from sitting idel for 11 months

Swabbed out the deck and all the exterior (dust and cat pee) dang feral cats running wild around here...we think they had a litter in the abandoned house 2 doors down (bank owned) you can hear the kitties hooting and howling for momma sometimes....

Did some assesment of the work from last fall....painted over the atrocious green / red brown on the inside.....it will seal a bit of water out...but its more for us to get motivated.... looks alot cleaner with a bit of silver rustoleum slapped on....we will prb trash that anyways as the exterior paint (overspray and such) plus we will prob carpet over mostr of it....but hey...for the memnt it looks better! 45 minutes burned on that and a 1/4 of a quart...not bad! that silver REALLY COVERS WELL!

we will be painting the bilge and ski locker silver probably too

Sweet MrDj! we are eternally grateful to Poseidon that the motor actually ran and ran decent! yea

working up the energy to go out into the garage and tear down the outdrive, sintall the impeller and new gaskets...sand it down for paint etc.....
