Hey Vegas,
The boat is looking good. Like you said it's the bottom and $15 bucks is still $15 bucks. Better in your pocket.
Your kids look like they are having a blast too.
Keep the pic's coming.

i'm a bit concerned that you may have the paint on too thick...
my boat is 22', and a quart of paint would cover the entire bottom, with some left to spare...and when tipping, i barely got anything on the brush..and what i did get on it, it was only on the tip of the brush...

i was close to 100 deg. out when i did my last couple of coats. my neighbor helped out and would come along side me and tip where i just rolled...i would get a strip about a foot wide when he would start tipping it off

Yeah a little of that paint went a LONG way for me as well. It's too hot. I didn't brush tip, more like a roller tip. If you go over your just painted area with the roller kinda quickly, it will knock down the bubbles but not have time to lift new ones.

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration project pix and costs associated

ahh....thanks for the "tip" fellas....lol get it...hehehhe

well our bubbles self leveled on thier own...I just brushed it because the paint liked it better....smoothed out more...
I shouold have bought some of their petit thinner..but...since it was the local boat shop they kinda rape ya so I skipped getting it....

what will work with it?
I have paint thinner/paint reducer/mineral sprits...will 10% of any of these added to it...help thin it out a bit?
and I dont think its too thick..mebbe a little because of the heat...we rollered it on pretty thin...that foam roller didnt load it up very thick....I might try a short knap roller on a test area

...we went through 1/2 qt and did a 6ft wide x 11 ft long area....66sq ft...and we got anough for a similar coat another 66sq ft...so thats 130 sq ft total coverage....
the gallon specs out on thier website for 600 sq ft total.....so a qt = 150sq ft total area....

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration project pix and costs associated

hahahahha thanks Bob...and yes the NEWMAN is the 1978 green boat...soon to be white.....newman brand etc...lol

we are pretty much done with the sleekcraft...now its just updates on fun stuff and misc repairs as we bust stuff lol

Here's the wife wet sanding the Newman ....the 1rst coat of Petit easypoxy is hardened up...so now taht she sanded with 220 wet...wiped it down etc...its ready for the second and final coat of white on the bottom
IMG_9102.jpg

while Miranda was wetsanding....I ran out to have a hydraulic line made for our sleekcraft ....last week we blew out a line when the drive tapped a submurged rock......amazing that the lines even work anymore as they are 30 years old!
$42 dollars later we have a new custom made stainless steel braided line installed on the sleek
IMG_9106.jpg

I believe today we are gonna play hookie and take the sleek out for some joyriding and beach fun....its only 10:30am and already over 100 degrees out....not very breezy either...good lake day! :D

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration project pix and costs associated

well today we wpied the bottom down with degreaser...my wife had previously sanded the bottom down after the 1rst coat.....

now on to the second coat....we used real short nap 4 inch rollers.....instead of teh foam rollers....that way a little more paint would lay down....the finish came out pretty good!

couple hours later I sanded the back transom area with 220 wet.....got rid of a few fiberglass resin drips...and commenced to paint it with the automotive urethane...figure the transom is easy enough area to work on for a test area....
did 5 coats .........sprayed on.....got some orangepeel....DOH!

once that dries in a few days we'll hit it with 1000 grit/1500 then polish it up to see if we can eliminate some of the orangepeel..... Ill post some pics later

Looks like you finally got some decent weather...

Those bunk boards look much better. I'm sure mine will need the same treatment soon enough...

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration project pix and costs associated

ok finally have a few minute sto upload some PICS! and video!

ok....so after we sprayed the transom....it had ALOT of orangepeel YUK! so Miranda wetsanded it 600/1000/1500 then I polished it with the meguiars...came out SLICK! :D the 1rst part of the vid is a test polish area and later on it shows the final look....

also we re-installed the bunk boards (which we covered with drop cloth plastic and a couple staples, that way the future paint work on the trailer and hull wont mess up the new bunk carpet...it will pull off 1rst time we splash her),

and then we moved the whole boat and trailer over about 2 feet so we have more room to work on the [prt side (it was close to the brick wall) the wife learned how to move stuff sideways using floor jacks...HAheheheheh.....I told her how fun it was to spin cars around and mess with people using floor jacks to move their cars muhhahah.

heres the pics and video link

VIDEO UPDATE on YOUTUBE click here!

Heres the orangepeel it was way bad...the single stage urethane we used sprayed like garbage couldn't dial in the gun right or something.......

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration project pix and costs associated

newly carpeted bunk boards with protective plastic on em.....still gotta mess with painiting the trailer and more hull work...UHG!
newman-paint%20(5).jpg

here's the under part of the hull edge where we have to sand and paint using the petit easypoxy....since we had tilted the boat hull...we had blocks holding it up here....so gotta wrap up taht area and the other side similar amount of area
newman-paint%20(6).jpg

Cant wait to see these fenders PEARL ORANGE! with glossy while trailer
we're gonna have the tires removed off the rims and paint the rimms gloss urethane white or orange...not sure which color...Im always leaning towards the orange!
newman-paint%20(7).jpg

oh and just as a reminder heres a crappy shot of the jump seats and engine doghouse all recovered in that crazy orange and white...should make a statement!

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration project pix and costs associated

thanks Bob...yup the wife and kids are part of the crew!

the other day we sanded the whole starboard side area and top starboard areas....100 grit dry...as the wet just wasn't cutting this super hard gel coat on this old boat... also sanded some more areas underneath ....as we still have a couple spots ot hit with petit easypoxy...areas where its way to hard to get the spraygun in there (like underside near the fenderwells etc...

been real hot and hard to motivate to get out there and do more sanding and such...

Later tonight Im gonna use up the rest of the easypoxy on the missed bottom areas.....and do some more sanding....on the port side...lots of sq footage there!

Man that boat is going to look smokin' Very detail looks great.

You're definately a hard worker too. You've gotten more work done in a weekend than I have all year.

Hahahha Sprintst...I might get more done in a weekend but you get more WORK done .....as in paying work...done in 2 days than I do in a month lol.....:D

well I lied earlier and said a week ago I would go out and finish up painting the bottom...it took me until LASTNIGHt to actually finish it up....now we can move on to more sanding and then prime/paint the sides glossy white! Im still mulling over whether or not I want to add a checkerboard pattern fade in orange to the back port and starboard sides for some interest......hmmm......:p
