Check out the video here TIME LAPSE painting the boat video click here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xA0UngabDtE

worst part is we still have about 4 hours or so of sanding the upper hull where the orange is going, plus the other 1/2 side of teh boat needs ot be sanded and painted too...figure another 10 hours of painting time...uuuhg

dang stuffs PRICEY too...and we need more of the Catalyst unfortunetly...:D

nice vids vegas....
funny, i had the same spots on my hull that i had to go back and repaint because thats where she was supported by the blocks....
touch up here, touch up there...

I still have to paint the cap and put the final coat on the hull, but that will happen after the interior is done

keep up the good work,
Dan

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration project pix and costs associated

well we're having to move ut of our house by the 13th of Oct....so we spent a few days searchin out rental properties in a small town 50 miles from Vegas...PAHRUMP! found a rental or 2 that would work (IE has a garage) waiting for the owner on one to give us the greenlight....hate waitin!

Ill prob pull the wheels off the Newman and put some new bearings in/grease etc for the move (this week)....I gotta cut apart the back axle thats been missin in all the trailer pics and weld on the new stubs (they killed em when the PO towed it 200 miles on bad dry bearings) then we can have the double axle installed and road ready...... the good news is if we get this particular rental house the garage is pretty frickin huge...so the Newman can fit into the new garage....if it will clear the top of the garage door opening :p

I WANT to finish painting it while were here at this house but the wife says NO....

we may do a last boating trip for the summer thingy with the sleekcraft....sure is warm here....water should be ok temp too... after that any trips will be fishin trips since it will get too cold for swimming

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration project pix and costs associated

Thanks Bob! as always!

OK update to the NEWMAN!
the game plan calls for replacing the wheel bearings and races on the Newman trailer this week, since we hafta drive it 80 miles down the rd, I got one side about done, the other side we'll wrap up monday. I bourght the welder and angle grinder home from storage......as we still hafta cut the old stubs off the one axle (its a double axle) because the PO ran the bearings dry and smoked the axle. so once we cut those off Ill re weld the new ones on and install the new hubs and bearings.....

also we've decided to drop teh 302 engine in Before we move it....save us alot of effort in the long run trying to move the motor in the back of the truck, unload it on a gravel driveway and store it again, then having install it anyways very soon....so were just gonna put it in, bolt it down.

the rearmost axle cant go on until we got that motor in anyways as that axle is in the way of the engine hoist.....it hits the hoist leg....so the MOTOR WILL BE IN! AXLE WILL BE ON! trailer lights will work! all this week! will post pics as we do the work. :D:D

Hey Richard! yeah she is in like flint! (The motor is in):D Ill post a pics ASAP...

we got the old axle welded together (new stubs) and installed, new bearings and seals all around too....the tires were new from the PO so they just needed air, I fixed a ground issue with the trailer lights....we dragged her over the hump into Pahrump from Vegas...no issues. ...we used the sleekcraft license plate for the day (DOH) :)

PHOTO UPDATE! yeah some progress!

Newman braking wheel....new bearings,,,,yea!
IMG_9756.jpg

here's the old bearing race on one of the wheels....see the ptting YUK!
IMG_9785.jpg

the newly refurbished rear axle installed...new stubs, cleaned up and painted.
and YES theres ALOT more welds on the stub than whats pictured, those are the smallest welds, the bottoms is welded bigtime full length. the axle is actually 2 U-channels in each other, I cut all the welds, removed the inner u-channel with the old stubs still attached, cut em off, cleaned it up, rewelded the new stubs on, then welded all that into the other u-channel.
IMG_9877.jpg

the old axle stub....both ere trashed.

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration project pix and costs associated

ok heres what the new hubs and bearings look like installed on the new axle stubs
IMG_9878.jpg

IMG_9881.jpg

IMG_9882.jpg

ok we actually did the motor install BEFORE we did that axle work...reason is the engine hoist worked out better from the side instead of the rear....anyways, the tires and axle would have hit the hoist. Not a good thing when the engine is max height on the hoist....plus we were on a slight inclined street...scary! lol
IMG_9799.jpg

boy the enginie hoist sure looks weathered!

she's in!
IMG_9805.jpg

it was a super tight sqeeze getting the outdrive half trough the hole....
IMG_9806.jpg

from this angle you can see why we went in with the hoist over the side...the transom area has this huge fiberglass area that the engine hoist coulnt extend past....
IMG_9801.jpg

heres the seats placed in for moving the whole shebang to Pahrump 80 miles away....some misc parts placed ini the center....

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration project pix and costs associated

some wild Burros were at the gas station on the way out of town, this dude was kinda close....they bite and kick sometimes...anywyas...we fed em a couple apples taht we had in the car with us.....
IMG_9910.jpg

a moving load....the little trailer I built worked well! we moved the VW chassis using it too....here the Yerf Dog gokart is on it...
IMG_9758.jpg

the next couple weeks ought to include working on the Newman...., painting the port side of the hull, painting the upper area pearl orange, hitting the trailer with white and orange.....etc etc...the outdrive will need some maintenance (new impeller, fluids, re-seal, cleanup and repaint, install..

Will update the thread as work gets done :) :p

Vegas the newman looks to be comming along nicely and it's good to see your posting a lil more often. I seen where the stubs were welded onto the c-channel @ the end you might want to consider filing in those voids they could result in the trapping of water when launching and retrieving a lil more weld and or epoxy might do the trick. By the way I like the color sceme your describing the brightness (might be a word) of the orange will pop on the water. I would also like to say I hope the new diggs work out for you and the family.

Heya FatFanny :)

Ill post some more pics soon of the welding I Did (a shot from the underside) and no matter what water will get into the voids...they are everywhere! there is no chance of sealing it all up due to the design of the axle...:p

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration project pix and costs associated

Hi Everyone, well Ive been MIA from Iboats, facebook and about every other social netowrking site for several months, mainly because my wife, kids and I have been living in a new area of the desert (Pahrump 65 miles from Las Vegas) which we love it out here.... anyways, we've been searching for a house, and have finally gotten one!

So the Newman is parked waiting for continuation of restoration, that is on hold due to the life change....anyways, so now the new project is RESTORING our house! lol we WILL be finishing the Newman soon enough....

and PS I have my eye on a 26ft sleekcraft ambassador that is down the road from our new house (along with a 1971 Dodge Challenger, and a couple 80s and 70s Vettes that this dude has layng around his property...lol MORE PROJECTS!

and for any of you that know him, Art Bell the radio guy famous for Coast to Coast AM and Dreamland radio shows in the late 80s, 90s etc is our next door neighbor!, in the Kingdom of Nye...as he would say
a 1/2 mile down the road is Sheri's Ranch and The Chicken Ranch (no they dont raise chickens and yes it's legal in the county we live in lol) and the best part, we now have an acre and a half to store boats and other projects on YIPPIE! a redneck like me can collect junk!lol

Boy Veags you and art should get along great! love that dude. Glad to here you are in good spirits and doing well looking forward to your next installment. By the way my sis that lives in Appache junction used to have a mint condition 71 Challenger in 79 when she lived in West Virginia she had it parked at the Bekley mall and some foul shoved a row of 30 shopping carts down the parking lot hill and ripped the whole front end completely off the car totaled it on the spot. I'll take one of those Vettes though!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
