I have an opportunity to pick up a spare drive for an electric shift 1978 OMC. I have a high profile 1978 OMC electric shift 225 OMC. The drive supposedly has 235 stamped on it. These sound like a straight swap. Are they?

I used to be a regular member and am always impressed with the knowledge out on this forum. it helped me get my siezed 74 Cobalt up and running like a champ. But at the price I found this complete freshwater outdrive, prop included, it is WAY cheaper than replacing seals, gears etc! I am just hoping its a pretty stright bolt up. I am fairly confident it will e. Same year and everything

See if you can track down Boomyal, he is a member who knows a whole bunch about the Stringer drives.
I am a Cobra guy so I couldn't say.

The gearing in the V-8 upper drives are all the same. The difference might be attributed to the motor/carb package that originally went with the drive.

There is no such thing as a 1978 Electric Shift. 1977 was the last year for Electrics at OMC.

If the drive is 1978 it's hydromechanical shift or has been converted since to full mech.

If they're both pre-1978 units, as long as they're both High Profile, they should be the same drive.

1976 was the last year for a "225" which was a 305 Chev.
In 1976 and 77, OMC offered the 235, which was a Ford V8

both used 1.16 ratio drives as Kieth was saying, compatible there.
