My father owns a 1978 Sea Ray with a 225HP OMC

He took apart the tilt assembly on the outside of the boat. The part attached to the I/O.

He is trying to put it back together. He is having a problem compressing the clutch assembly to put the horse-shoe ring back on. He said it is really hard to compress and he can't get the ring back on. Is there a trick to this or a special tool?

Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :)

The seloc manual show them using a hydraulic arbor press to compress the clutch pack so the retaining ring can be removed and installed.

Thanks! I asked if had looked in his manual. He received a Selco manual with the boat.

Anyone do anything differently than the manual says? Any little hints or tricks I should tell him?

Thanks again :)

Bubba's the only one I know that might compete with a hydraulic arbor press!

Shade
I removed one or two shims when I did mine. It had had water in it. Even after removing shims I could not force the outdrive up by hand or with full throttle in reverse. Put the shims aside just in case. I wish I had removed more shims as I feel outdrive still too hard to kick up if I should ever hit something.

Re: 1978 OMC I/O Tilt Assembly

It's supposed to take 165 ft lbs plus of torque before it breaks away. It would be hard to achieve that, manually, using the outdrive leg as leverage. It would be interesting to be able to test it. I have a friend who hit something and it tore the lift quadrant right out of the upper drive case, just broke off the bolt pads.

I guess that having water in the clutch packs must inhibit the release of the clutches?

Boomyal
You could be right about water having a effect. at the time I though the fiber shims may have swelled. I would like to see mine kick up one time. I figure as long as it does not kick up in hard reverse then it must not be too loose. I changed both seals on the output shaft and o ring on the other side. Filled with 10-30 motor oil and check for water 3 times a year now. Always change the oil after returning form a week of saltwater fishing.
