I have a Quadrajet on a 1978, 305. I rebuilt it myself & it works fine now except for one problem that I can fix if I could find the parts. The problem is that "Bubba" somewhere along the line pounded on the two primary fuel discharge nozzles & enlarged the openings as well as pounding them out of shape. What is happening is that the fuel is bubbling up out of the soft brass nozzles & trickling down into the engine throwing it off balance at idle. When I accelerate the fuel come up faster & puts a slight hesitation in the pick up, like a bad accelerator pump would cause. All this gas is causing a slight cough back up through the carb as well. A new carb was about $800.oo out the door. No one knows where to get the jets even after I take the carb down to their shop & show them what I am talking about. Diesel Walt is right about there being a lack of carburetor experts around. I ain't no mechanic but I'm wondering if they even know what little I know? I'd like to fix this carb a put it on another boat I just picked up. It's the same carb on a 1979, 350. Anyone know where I can get these jets? Thanks, BeenLurkin.

Find an old grizzled parts man and maybe if he's in a good mood he'll help you.
Or buy a boneyard Quadrajet and use those. I have a Quadrajet I'll let go real cheap.

Just go by the local experienced parts dealer and pick up a "new" main body for few $$ and change your jets/metering rods over.
But the problem you describe is usually caused by
the phenolic float getting gas logged and causing a higher fuel level than you think you have, the gasket under the fuel inlet seat leaking, and/or the soft plugs in bottom of the jet wells leaking. Q-jet
floats are only good for a year or two, unless you can find a brass one.

On some of the old auto carbs they used a metal plate under the carb to keep the heat away. I don't know if boats used it or not but it will cause the same problems you have if left out on a car.

Thanks again for all the excellent information here. I just went through that sinking float thing on my 1978 Dodge truck. got the brass one in there now. Diesel Walt, how much do you want for that carb you got? Got any more information on it, year & number? I might be interested.
