Re: 1978 Starcraft Holiday 18 Rebirth

It looks like El Chupacabra poop :)

I can't remember how many gallons I went through as I epoxied the snot out of everything. Everything got a serious coat of epoxy and then the underside of the deck got epoxied...but the top got a covering in glass cloth and then a coat of epoxy spread with a bondo spreader to smooth it out one it was riveted in place.

My seat boxes, gunwale supports, etc all got coated in epoxy as well as rebuilt engine supports, rear deck supports, transom epoxy peanut buttered together and then coated...basically anything made of wood :) 4-5 gallons if I remember.

Are you planning to epoxy the Yeti poop or just paint it ?:) Nice boat and nice tear down. I know what you mean about the long bolts seems like all of starcrafts hardware came in two sizes long and longer:D.Glad to see it wasn't pour in foam I thought 78 might have been but guess it came a bit later? Would be good to know what not to buy in the future.

On second thought it might be disgruntled employee poop. The guy might have won the lottery and left it as a parting gift.

It's probably just mud :)

On the foam front you probably just saved a week of work and a months worth of swearing.

Got back to the gutting tonight, suprised to see things pretty clean and dry under the floor, some of the foam at the back was wet but dry for the most part. Had the normal mouse motels dug out in it..... how do they get up into the boat anyways??? Half figured Id find an old gas tank below deck but nada, guessing they ran some sort of bigger tank above deck since it has the fill on top of the splashwell and the dash gauge?

Last piece of floor coming out, this was pretty rotted and soaked but managed to get it out in one piece to use for a template.

Had a major accident tonight, if you look towards the bottom right of the picture you can see the carnage that unfolded. It took a fall from the edge of the boat, wasn't anything I could do to save it other than get a new/full one.

Re: 1978 Starcraft Holiday Rebirth

Last few days Ive been taking all the bolts and other garbage out of the transom getting ready to yank out the rotted mess. I understand the whole sticking a piece of that starboard stuff on the transom to mount transducers so your not putting holes in the boat. But when you use 4 good size screws below the water line to hold the board on to keep from putting two small screws for a ducer bracket in it really does defeat the purpose.:facepalm::facepalm::facepalm:

I should specify that this is what the PO had done........

Use a tall enough piece to be able to bolt in on above the waterline,......Use adhesive of some sort on the bottom,.....No hole below the waterline that way,...

And you able to move or add transducers as needed without more hole in the hull,...

Epoxy question - How much do you guys think Id need to order to do my transom, seat boxes, and those side panels that will be recovered in vinyl? So not the floor, thats getting that magic poly something rubber paint stuff I used on the Falcon. Will more than likely be going with an exterior grade ply.

I did my transom, two back to back seat boxes, and i will get the bottoms of my deck (2 coats) all done with UScomposites 2 gallon kit. I have a 2nd two gallon kit still in the box for the top deck and other stuff.

Cool Dave, you've got alot of floor there so just doing the transom and seat boxes I should be pretty good with a gallon, if not Im sure they will send me more. LOL

Anybody heard or used these folks for epoxy? I was just doing some searching for a better deal (my dutch ancestors would be mad if I didnt).

http://www.aeromarineproducts.com/epoxy-adhesive.htm I found them on Amazon selling the gallon kit for $46 on there. Im thinking of going for it. What do those numbers mean (300/11)?

I take that back after checking it out. Sound like a good deal. For that price I'd get the two gallon kit though. A UScomposites 2 gal kit is 2 gal resin and approx, 1 gal hardener. Their 2 gallon kit is one gal of each. Different quanities.....

Well I went ahead and ordered some, I figure it has to be better than when I put the poly resin with no cloth on the Falcon transom and that was doing just fine when it was sold. LOL

Been working at the transom the last couple days, finally got the thing out. Whoever replaced the transom the last time coated the boat skin side of it with some sort of resin but didnt do the edges or side facing inside the boat, didnt acomplish much as you can see.

The layer of resin on the top corner was about the only thing solid, rest was mush.

Today starts 6 days off from work for some time with the boat. Want to get the inside all powerwashed out and do a leak test. Maybe GlovIt depending on how warm it gets but I guess that can wait till later on. After that Im thinking I want to get it flipped and start stripping some paint, need to find some strong guys to turn it over...... I've got beer and vension steaks.... lol

You said venison stakes so I am here, at your garage door, ready to flip this rig, typing this on my phone, are you awake?

I don't smell any steak, or eggs, or coffee.

Awww man, I guess I'll just need to swing over to iHop or something. Rats!

Nice work on transom (mulch) removal!:D
