Hello all, im new here. Bought a boat the titled boat yesterday for $400 dollars. The thing is, I haven't actually seen the boat in person. I'm a student and am away at college. So i had my father go to look at the boat. I trust his opinion on all mechanical things, he is an engineer and loves to restore cars so i was comfortable having him look it over. He stated that it looked in good condition motor ran forwards and backwards, started right up, interior needed to be bolted down. All in all a fine boat, especially for 400. So I bought it. All that being said neither of us have any expertise in boats nor very much experience with them. So I was hoping if i posted a bunch of pics you guys might be able to spy possible problems that will need to be fixed or would make it alot better. Gotta start saving. I appreciate all input.

Thanks Zak

Here is the origonal description.

1978 starcraft holiday 18 pleasure boat the boat is in good shape starts up and runs good goes into gear with no problems just ran all the wiring from the front to the back with a new fuse box up under the dash. new horn and button. some new hydraulic lines. no leaks in lines. new electric fuel pump- it also comes with stationary trim tabs, comes with a kicker motor mount that sells for $200.00 has a shorelander trailer in great shape with a new wench- brand new tires on it and buddy bearings the tailer is in great shape and the boat is in very good shape i just can't finish it. I just bought a ranger used that i'm fixing up so no time to finish this one. it needs the interior put in it. i have the wood boxes that the seats were bolted to and the engine cover which is also made out of wood. i was going to replace this with pedestal seats and build a deck to fish off of but like i said i have another project. i will throw in the seats and all the wood box's. the floor is in good condition and the carpet is still in it although it's loose and needs to be glued down it's still in good shape. I have a very low start price and am not looking for much but please don't let that fool you this is not a junk boat. i do have the michigan title for the boat but i do not have the title to the trailer. i live in illinois and thats where the boat is now. when i bought the boat i was told that the trailer was registerd as a homemade and in michigan you just get a forever (never expires) license plate. that plate is still on the trailer. in illinois i checked with the secretary of state and to get an illinois title you need to bring in a picture of the trailer and they will issue a homeade title for a $65.00 fee. THAT WILL BE UP TO THE BUYER. the boat is registered thru 09 with a michigan sticker. it does have a good battery and will start right up for anyone local who wants to check it out.

Um Zak I dont know how to break this to you but dude your a thief :D:D. You did good on that boat .

Ok lets see Starcraft boat Check . Required pictures Check . Ok Welcome to iboats and the Starcraft club .:D Theres alot of us doing Restos on Starcrafts here . The first thing I would do is rip out all the carpet including off the top of the bpoat WTH were they thinking LOL. I would check the Deck ( floor ) for soft spots and maybe even rip it out and start over with fresh exterior grade plywood covered with resin and then Glassed on top once its in the boat . The seating is up to you lots of options although I will admit the buckets sitting back to back look hokey to me :D. vI just picked up a set of back to back Lounge seats for my Jupiter . Overall the boat looks great and will be a fairly easy resto from what I see . Come check out the Starcraft forums and look around the resto forum for more Starcrafts being done . There are also some finished Starcrafts in the completed section just below this one North Beaches SWEET Sunchief is at the top of the list in that area right now and is a very good one to look at to see how to do one up right . Good luck with her and keep us updated on work on her and yes we like pictures :D.

First thing I'd want to know is if it leaks or not.

Take her out on the lake and see how much water seeps in past the rivets.

If your very lucky, there will be very little, but I doubt that. Depending on how much water leaks in will tell you if you are ripping up the whole floor to fix the hull.

Can of gluvit and a couple hammers will fix up the rivets and you can start putting a floor back down.

I'd do that before I looked at doing anything else.

But looks like a really good find. Congrats.

Re: 1978 starcraft holiday 18 w/120hp i/o

Thanks for all the encouragement guys. I wanna work on it now it sucks. Im in honolulu now. I know i shouldn't complain, but i wanna see my boat.

My dad is gonna take the boat out this weekend just to see if everything functions properly in water. No tubing or anything.

I plan on keeping the boat for a while so I figure why put off the inevitable. So the plan is to rip up the floor, pull out the foam. Reseal the floor of the hull, fix any bad rivets and such. Then Redo the foam and floor. Tear that dash out and rebuild something simple but solid. Redo the carpet on the floor and sides. Then rebuilt in the seats. Maybe put in some speakers if money allows.

As for the mechanics of the boat, what do you think should/needs to be replaced? I assumer that the water pump should be. replace some gauges, the throttle. What else is a good idea to replace?

I wouldnt replace guages or throttle unless they are bad throttle can be rebuilt . Ripping up the deck is a good idea mine was actually quite solid but I would have never known the foam was soaked or about the ( extra stringers ) if I hadnt pulled it . I would go through it and redo what needs to be done the carpet on the cap has to go actually just get rid of all the carpet vinyl doesnt hold water like carpet does.

Not too sure about the actual water "pump"
but be sure and replace the water "impeller" in the lower leg that picks water up.

They should be changed once a year as reg maint, along with all fluids in the OD & motor.

good luck..too bad you aare so far away from the boat..I know the feeling, though usually not in Hawaii..lol

Nice looking boat, especially for the price. I agree with all the advice already given.

I checked your pics and the one thing that I noticed is what looks like bare wood. IMO, I'd pull the carpet and coat all the bare wood with a resin then apply a thin fiberglass cloth for preservation/waterproofing. Otherwise, if the wood gets good and wet, you're off to happy land with the rest of us doing a complete boat restore due to rot in a few years.

Nice boat man... You are a thief :) She looks to be in really good shape to start off with.

It's nice to see a boat like mine as we'll be pretty close on the old parts list.
