1978 VIP Bass Boat Restoration

Hey guys,

New guy here, name is Chris. My grandfather gave me a 1978 VIP Bass boat before he passed away and I have been working on restoring it.

My initial plans were to just replace the carpet and the seats. However, I soon realized that the gelcoat was not in good enough shape to look nice again, so I decided I would paint it. While sanding the down the boat I realized that most of the rivets holding the deck to the hull had either broke or worked their way out. So I took off the rub rail and drilled out all of the rivets holding the two pieces together. Then I noticed that the transom was in pretty bad shape and their were quite a few soft spots in the floor where the deck met the floor. As you can see the project has snowballed from a simple "fixer upper" to a full blown tear down and rebuild.

At this point I am questioning whether its worth continuing with the restoration or if I should scrap it and start looking for a boat that is structurally sound to start fixing up. Since my grandfather gave me the boat before he passed away, I had hoped to restore it and keep it as a way to keep in him in memory. However, I never fished out of this boat with my grandpa, and I am not sure if he even used it, so it does not have a whole lot of sentimental value.

The trailer also needs a lot of work, and I am sure the engine does as well. He said it ran when he gave it to me, but he also told me it only needed seats and carpet.

Here's a link to a thread when I originally started the project. As you can tell from some of my comments I really had no idea what I was getting in to.

Thanks for any advice in advance!

Pelhament, It really depends on what you want out of it. If you want to go fishing this year, I agree with Woodonglass, get what you can out of it and find a better boat. If you are looking for a long term project, then tear in to it. Its your call. One piece of advise I have is not to let anyone con you out of that engine. Even vintage Johnsons are highly prized. You may not get a ton of money out of it, but if you keep it it's worth getting running again. Johnson outboards have a rep for being bulletproof. If the flyweel will turn without seizing, then they generally will run. I have seen some really old and abused Johnsons brought back to running with little effort.

As already said, it depends on how soon you want to hit the water. Personally, I'd restore it. Depending on how much free time you have will impact how quick you can get it done. Now I would check out the engine good, if it's okay (like drewpster said they really are pretty tuff) then I'd go for it.

Your budget also has a lot to do with it, but since you have $0 in it now, you're in good shape there. Restoring it to like new isn't cheap, but when you're done you'll have a rig for years to come. Also depends on whether or not the boat is what you like in a fishing boat too. My 2 cents.

If this is a boat, that if it was in excellent condition, would be a boat that you would really like, go ahead and restore it. It will probably cost you $2k+. Otherwise, look for something else that's solid. Agree that that Johnson is a heck of a motor.

You're done a lot of work on it.
You may not have spent much $$ ...YET!

For me, project boats are about the love of doing it, and the way to get a good boat with using my labor and 'some' money.
I'm rarely satisfied with what some people call a "Good used boat".

Like said before, you'll have around $2000 into it and YOUR time!

To get a "GOOD" boat/motor/trailer, it will cost $XXXX, you fill in the number!

This the way I look at too.....A nice bass boat will run anywhere from 16K - 45K, so if I've got 5K in one completely restored (yeah it's 17 years old) then I'm way ahead of the game and have a rig for years and years to come. Plus knowing whats under your feet is totaly sound and the pride of saying "I done this myself" That's just me.

Re: 1979 VIP Bass Boat Restoration

Thanks a lot guys for the information. I started tearing out the transom yesterday and it gets worse the farther down I get... I think what I am going to do is cut out the floor and see what is down there. At the very least I can gain some knowledge on what the inside of a boat looks like. Tearing out the transom was enough work to make me want to scrap the project altogether :) I already purchased, new seats, carpet, paint and guages so I have quite a bit of money into the asthetics of it already. Now I am trying to justify putting more money into a boat, when I have already spent more than its worth, but like some of you said I know I will have a solid platform I can trust if I do go forward.

As far as the motor is concerned, that is great to hear. The flywheel spins freely and I trust that it will run but may need a little Maintenance to get it to run perfectly.

I was thinking of just taking my circular saw to the floor with about 1/4" of the blade exposed. Is that the way to go about it? I tried using my pneumatic cut off wheel yesterday on the transom but that didn't go very smoothly.

Hello Pel..and welcome to Iboats..

So you have a 79' bass boat that needs..

New transom
New Deck
New stringers more then likely..
New carpet
New Paint job

And some other misc oddball things ..

Your call matey.

But if just tearing out your transom is making you second guess this project..then I would say get as much $ outa it and move on to another boat..

Re: 1979 VIP Bass Boat Restoration

Well I ripped the floor out today. My circular saw and pry bar made short work of it. Needless to say the foam is completely saturated with water and the stringers don't even appeared to be fiberglassed. They look like they are just bare wood which is now rotten.

I started tearing some of the foam out and it is a complete pain in the *****. Any recommendations to make this go a little quicker?

I'll have pictures up tomorrow of what the wood floor looked like under the fiberglass, and what the foam looks like under the wood.

Pel,
Unless the sentimental value has Kicked in, or your curiosity has gotten the better of you, I would not sink anymore time or effort into this project. Keep the motor and other hardware, chainsaw the hull into manageable sizes and find a project that is worth your time and effort. IMHO this is a LOST CAUSE!!!!!

Woodonglass - At this point, I don't have the money to buy a new boat, and my son his with his grandparents for a week. So with nothing to do, I figured why not explore a little and see how far I could get in the tear down, and how much I could learn in the process.

Here are the pictures I promised.

I really dont know what you just said there King rat.. Mite wana tink abot t a bite befour possting..

..

Pel..

You Do have a full resto here..and we will be happy to help in anyway if you decide to take this thing on.

Just dont get too carried away cutting and diggin before you KNOW what you need to do before you take the next step ..

Right now I would suggest starting to brace the side hull/deck joint ( Your going to have a bare skinned hull before you know it :)

Get some grinding suits and a Full face respo ( or a resporator and goggles with about 80% of the goggle holes Taped up ).

Ask for your next step..you will learn When Why and How before you do things..
