The engine should idle between 143 and 155 as measured on the heads, with a laser temp gun. The water that goes through the block at idle all goes through the stats. As soon as you get on plane, the increased water pressure will force the pressure relief valves open in the stat housing. This will flood the powerhead with extra cooling water. Usually the cyl head temps will go down at least 10 to 20 degrees when this happens. Your engine is doing just the opposite, the temps are up to 178. This is too hot. A hot horn sounds at 212 and silences when the heads get back down to 175. Your 178 temp is too high for normal operation. Not sure if you are measuring the 178 when the engine is running in the water or is sitting on the trailer running on the garden hose.

The 178 temp was taken with an temp gun on the bypass covers. The 118F temp was on the heads. I threw in the white towel today and took it to a mechanic.

Update soon.

I truly feel your pain! I found a cracked bulkhead through hull fuel fitting cracked today. It seems to never end, but I guess when ya buy used its what you get. Although I have heard of brand new ones where people are having lots of troubles, go figure...... I will deffinently be very intimate with mine by the time it is all done.

Well this sucks. Looks like I'll be pulling powerhead off. Mechanic thought it was the bypass cover gaskets blowing out when we were cranking it over. WRONG!!! It turns out when I rebuilt the motor, I either A) didn't clean it good enough when applying the sealer between the 2 halves, or B) didn't goop on enough and it didn't seal properly. Either way I look at it, I have to rip it apart.

So much for getting it on the water this year :(

Time to go buy some gaskets (Again)

Spent time today tearing down motor. Found next to no sealer between crankcase halves. I obviously didn't use enough the first time. Cleaned everything and applied more sealer, hopefully I didn't go overboard this time. I think my mistake the first time was only applying it to one half, which from what I've read, is not enough. This time round I applied a bead to both halves. When everything was torqued down, some of the sealer squished out inside. Maybe more than it should have , maybe not. Will this be an issue?

I'm going to wait 48 hrs before I attempt to fire it up. Update soon

Good luck w/ it. How did you diagnose there was a problem with the crankcase seal?

Took it to a mechanic who checked it over. It appeared to be blowing out the bypass covers. WHen he opened them up , he said the gaskets were fine and the only possible thing it could be is the seal between the 2 halves was leaking. Once I tore it down, it was obvious the seal was blown out. This has been a royal pain all summer trying to figure this out.

Its starting to get get cold out and I'm eager to get this in the water for one trial run before packing it up for winter.

Tomorrow will be the big test (in the driveway). Fingers crossed !!

Re: 1979 100hp Johnson Javelin V4 100TLR79S will not idle

All back together, finally ! First try was not succesful. I then realized I had the Idle Bleeds from the original carbs in place so I went back and changed the Idle Bleeds back to the ones from the replacement carbs. Fired it up and after a bit of tinkering SUCCESS !!!

She appears to be idling a hell of a lot better now (in the driveway) without any noticable sneeziing. There is no more puffs of smoke blowing out of the crankcase halves.

Tomorrow or Saturday morning will be the test at the lake. Providing Mother Nature doesn't come out and play.

Now heres something maybe someone can clear up for me ...... I replaced the original carbs from my 100hp ( 1" throat and #25 Idle Bleeds) with a set of carbs off a 115hp (1 3/16" throat and #27 & #28 Idle Bleeds). Is the outboard still a 100hp or is it now 115hp ????

UPDATE: Mother Nature was not so nice this weekend. Strong winds, rain, and we even had a bit of snow!!

Packing boat up for the year and will wait until spring. This was not a good year :(
