Re: 1979 140 mercury idles rough stalls when i put it in gear
Most of the other stuff to try requires no real money. If the motor is overpropped for the boat it'll do the same thing, ditto if the carbs carbs are too lean, or the timing and sync is off.

When he went to school in 1980, the reed blocks from a 1957 Tower Of Power were 23 years old. It was harly a radically new design.

If I'm not mistaken 1979 was the changeover year to ADI - I think early 79's had distributors.

To test the reed blocks (after exhausting prop and adjustment issues) try doubling the oil and see if it helps. If it does, then it's time to consider them as suspect.

As a major player in the Inline 6 overhauling market, I have to say I rarely see bad reed blocks in the fishing motors.

They used those type blocks on the 4 cylinder Super Thunderbolt from about 1949-1999, and on the six from 1957-1988, hardly an unproven design.

I'm not saying they can't get worn, especially the center one, but it's more likely to be mis-adjusted or overpropped as opposed to having worn out reed blocks.

-W
