I have a 1979 15 johnson that i need to change the lower seals on. My question is can i just pull out the bearing housing ? what keeps the gears and propeller shaft in ? and how do i pull the bearing and seal housing out ? and if i can do this what is the right way to remove oil seals and put it all back together ?

Thanks to all for your great no-how.

I always pressure test first (mouth blow into tube is enough to find leak w/soapy water spray), replace offending seal, and re-rest.

On fresh water motor they usually come out easy.----Try and rotate the housing so you can use a drift to bump it out.----It might be a good idea to weaken the seals with a Dremel to pop them out.
