1979 15hp rope start

Replaced rope and put back together but there is a red "arm lever" off the side of the recoil. What is it and what does it do? Can't find it on any diagrams. If I don't zip tie it back it catches the gear on the pull start. Not the pinion to the flywheel but the yellow one underneath it. Thanks

That prevents you from starting the motor in gear. There should be a split in it with the large side facing the recoil. You need to have the post on the recoil in that split. There is also a spring in that assembly the long end goes on the outside of the post. There is also chance that yours is broken put up a Pic.

Okay. Looked like it just sat inside the hook of the post. Makes sense. I don't have a problem starting it in gear though even though it is harder on the pinion gear. Also, the bolt holding it in works loose pretty quickly and the doesn't engage well. Tighten it too much and it won't recoil.

Is the washer inside the cup by the spring.

As far as I know. I just removed the whole thing but didn't take it apart. I know there is supposed to be a washer in the cup. There was one under the cup against the block. Maybe someone put it together wrong and it is supposed to be in there.I will check. Thanks.

I bet yer missing the washer under the spool.

under the recoil cup is a hook that goes in hole located powerhead mountind arm.
you must fit this hook into this hole

The red lever prevents you from pulling it over when too much throttle is applied.-

Thanks. I saw the hook and will do. Seems like this engine's starting procedure is full throttle with choke out. Two pulls it starts, push choke in and let it warm up.

?---Full throttle should not be needed for starting.---Pull out for full choke.-----With motor in neutral you advance throttle to the idle stop.----You ignore markings on the handle.----Then with it shifted into forward the idle stop goes out of the way to enable full throttle in gear.

That is what I meant. Idle with throttle all the way up. Sorry for the confusion.
