I've finally recovered from the epic paint screw up last weekend. Had to sand that all down, and I put a coat of blue on last night. Unfortunately I could see sanding marks through the first coat, so I sanded with 400 and then 600 grit between coats. Second coat is on now and looks good.

Frustrated that I essentially lost a week over a stupid mistake, but what's done is done, and it's better now.

I ended up calling Wefco and ordering the rub rail insert. The person on the phone was better than whoever I was emailing.

I have a mobile of boat parts

The end caps, bow cap, rub rails, and the gunnel inside corner trim will all be painted with Rustoleum's "Aluminum" color. All these pieces were pretty beat up so I have no choice but to paint because each of them required several marine tex repairs.

You sure have a bunch of room to work in, nice to have a place heated inside to keep pushing on through the winter months.

Yes I was lucky to find this place that a colleague of mine had for rent for a very fair price. My house does not have a garage because the previous owner remodeled it into a master bedroom. I didn't need the extra space so I added a kitchen to it and I rent it out to a retired lady for a lot more than I am paying for this space. And the boat space is in a warehouse area so totally deserted on nights and weekends when I'm working. I can make as much noise as I want and there's nobody to hear it :D

Some of you may have seen my poll about the aluminum paint. I decided against it. I thought about it all day today, but ultimately I'm afraid it would look tacky. I ended up playing it safe and going with grey:

Yeah that looks good to me, I painted my trim black to break up all the gray.

What adhesive did you end up using for the vinyl?
I'm using Weldwood Contact Cement. Seems to stick pretty well.

Only issue is the can says it should be ready 15 minutes after applying, but I have found that it takes closer to 30 before you can bond the pieces. The space I'm in stays around 60 degrees so I'm sure that has something to do with it.

Also you really do have to be careful with the fumes. When I did the first section of the floor I got seriously buzzed and could hardly form coherent thoughts and do accurate work. It was like I'd pounded 3-4 drinks. Now I run the fan in the window on high, and crack the door open.

Ah ok, I use the 3M 80 and you may want to invest in a respirator.
