Hello everyone,

Iam new to this site, but have used information here before. It seems like there is a lot of useful knowledge and helpful people on this forum which prompted me to join it recently after purchasing a new (old) boat.

The boat I am doing is a super sport from 1979. It's 22 feet long, aluminum and is the outboard model. I've got a 200HP V6 Merc and a 7.5HP Merc kicker, both 1979. My main goal is to fully restore the hull and turn it into a great lakes trolling boat. The first questions I have regard redoing the floor.

I have ripped out the old foam and dead mice and will be removing the gas tank and checking for leaky rivets. But... looking ahead to the flooring, I was going to lay more thin (<1/8" by 3 or 4 inches wide) galvanized strapping perpendicular to the gusets (sp?, sorry). Will the galvanized strapping 'react negatively' with the aluminum? What else could I use?

As for the new deck, I was going to buy regular 3/4 inch plywood, cut it to size and then paint it before installation (both sides) with spar varnish (Helmans) then once more again prior to laying the vinyl floor... I will be sure to give ample drying time and I figure the second application would allow it to penetrate into screw holes, etc. Will this method work and last a while? I know that marine plywood and PT plywood are generally suggested but I'd like to keep the cost reasonable. I've also been told to try construction grade form-ply for heavy concrete forming. Again this is my first time, I'd like to keep it cheap and try to get a good length of time out of it.

I came here cause it seems that there is experience and I greatly appreciate your time and direction as I'd like to do it once, do it properly and keep it within a reasonable price. Thank you for you time and ANY help is appreciated!

Thanks again and take care!

One more thing.... this regards foam reinstallation... all the foam i've come across is expensive and combustable. If it comes down to having my boat sink or igniting and burning to death, i'll let it sink... unless theres reasonable options hahaha... any suggestions on purchasing bulk chunks of foam?

thanks again!

Welcome! I just picked up a '72 21' Starcraft Chieftain with a 115hp Mercury outboard from the same year.
Are you talking about tying your aluminum stringers (pieces that run front to back and hold the deck up) together? If so, there's no need. The deck will do fine by itself. And yes, from what I've read here, it is a bad idea to mount galvanized steel to aluminum.

Welcome to the Starmada Kyle, I would give my eyeteeth for one of them. Stay away from PT wood as it will corrode the aluminum. I use Helmsman Spar varnish to seal all the wood on my rebuilds, minimum of three coats with a light sand between. We really need to see some pictures of this boat. If you go to the Starcraft section on the forum you will find a thread that lists all the rebuilds that are in progress or finished.

Hey! Check out my thread as we have the same boat. I ended up going with pour in foam again for under the deck. Not cheap, but I felt it was the easiest to install and I wanted the sound deadeding qualities of it. I used 1/2" thick Menards marine grade covered in epoxy for my new deck and it's plenty strong. I feel 3/4 would be overkill and cost ya more. Our boats have 4 stringers which means more deck support than most others.

We would all LOVE to see some pics. Photobucket is the easiest way to do that. Welcome!!!

I just get finished making a comment on a new 22' Holiday thread and now a 22' SS? What's with everyone showing up with these AWESOME hulls all of a sudden?? Congrats! That's an fantastic boat that I'd sure love to have. I've been on one and the amount of room is phenomenal. Welcome to iboats and to the the largest collection of Starcraft nuts on the planet.

Hey guys, here's some pictures... for foam floatation i was gonna use pool noodles (heard it's much cheaper), for the new floor 3/4 inch exterior plywood coated a couple times in spar urethane.... i'm a newbie so i'm sure i'll run into problems around every turn, thanks for the help and pointers guy!

the pictures are on my website (sorry, no photobucket)... heres the url...

I really like those bigger Starcrafts. Are you replacing the transom also?

the transom was replaed and is still in good shape... i'm not going to attempt it... just new foam, flooring and deck material... anybody know where to get rubber like in hockey arenas? the 1/8" gritty rubber... its waterproof and tough enough for skates... thought id be good for boats!

kyle

p.s. thanks on the lures !!!!

The pour in foam will give you better flotation in the event that the you find yourself swamped on the Great Lakes,...It may very well save your life, In my opinion "pool noodles" are a bad idea,...

1/2 inch plywood properly sealed is more than adequate for the floor,.....3/4 inch will add unnecessary weight and unnecessary weight helps to sink boats,....

The same goes for the rubber mats for flooring, Just adds more weight, And chances are it will be black and that will be stupid hot on the water in the summertime,..........

These are just my opinions,...........

This is the flotation Starcraft had in my boat from the factory

I fail to see how this is superior to noodles. Especially since white foam absorbs water like a sponge.

And while I'm being contrary :p There's no way I'd go less than 5/8" with my deck on that big hull.

Yup, I knew it, guys yakikin about foam.

Here's one more...

Pour in flotation traps water. There, I entered the conversation. Now I'm out.

For your deck, my opinion...

You actually have 4 stringers to work with so I feel that 1/2" is just fine (with epoxy as it will stiffen the ply). If you went 5/8" you'd have uber bomber feel under foot. 3/4" over your set up would be over kill.

Just one man's thoughts on a Thursday morn:)

Re: 1979 22' Starcraft Super Sport O/B Rebuild.

are the pool noodles flammable?

I had stored a bunch of blue dock foam for years, along with some sheets of 2" thick foundation foam from home depot, made by corning.

when i moved and had no place to store all my stuff, i burned a bunch. that foam is sooooooo flammable it would blow your minds!!!

it burns and melts and wih a blue flame!!!!!!!!!!! and even as it melts it burns like sterno!

I am going to add foam under my project starcraft...and was going to "settle" on the 2" thick dow corning board....but if there is a less flammable alternative that isnt a MIXED two part foam...i am interested.

although i think the pool noodles prevent full floatation coverage.... the hollow id's are lost foam volume in my view.

I agree 100% to all he said....

No one can dispute the fact that no other method will add more flotation than pour in foam........just saying.....
