I'm realy fighting this engine. Here's the story: I conected the motor and hooked up the plug. It started but wouldn't shut off. I tryed to rig a kill switch thruogh the control box that just ground the black and yellow wire to the cd unit. ITried to start it and all I get is a few pops and nothing. Thinking ut-oh I fried the cd unit. so I buy a new one and the motor cranks but wont start. Scratching my head,I unplug the motor from the controller and jump the starter and it starts up and runs fine. I try to plug in the controller the motor dies. Thinking the controler is bad I hook it up to my 25 horse to it and the motor starts and run as it should. What is wrong? coils good! power pack Good! What is left? The only thing I can think of is the rectifier. Any help would be very very much appreciated. ps. My manuals trouble shooting guide is a little help. Thanks.....Robert:confused:

I think you've answered your own question. Before you hooked up that kill switch, the engine ran, but wouldn't shut down. You hooked up the kill switch, and it wouldn't run. You unplugged the controller, and the engine runs. The kill switch is the culprit. I'm not sure of what wires are used on that model for the kill switch, but apparently it's not the two you used, or you wired them incorrectly. Solve that and you've solved your problem.

If you do something that causes your engine not to run, the first step should be to undo the thing you did and check again. Still, you now have a spare CD unit, eh?

Thanks for the help, most appreciated, I have done as suggested and remove the modification and it's wiring. The control is back to original and the motor turns over, but still wont start plugged into the control. I will start if I jump across the solenoid after it is unplugged. This getting narrowed down. What next? replace the solenoid and try again? Thanks.....Robert

have you checked the inline fuse in the red case, near the solenoid. if it is blown, nothing in the control will work.

Not even close to running out. Again, you said that when you unplug the connector, the engine runs. The fuze is OK. It also quit when you tried to wire up a kill switch.

You need to trace the wires that kill the engine, both before and after the connector. Odds are that the problem is after the connector, since it runs with the connector pulled. I'm betting there's a stray short somewhere in the cable, there and it's just like you had a kill switch operating.

I'm a magneto guy, so I can't tell you where those wires go and what color they are, but I'm about 100% sure your problem is there. You need to check your manual and figure out which wires are the ones for the kill circuit and trace those down. You can even bypass them in the cable with an external wire or wires, if it's an internal problem in the cable.

You're close to getting this fixed up. You just have one problem left, and it should be easy to find, if you have the wiring diagram. If not, then you'll have to work through a process of elimination. When you find the bad wire/wires, bypass them and you should be in good shape.

Remember, the key is that the engine runs when the connector is unplugged. Work from the connector to your controls and you'll find the problem.

Thanks for the info, I'll get my multimeter out and check continuity of the run circuit. That if I'm not mis taken should show and open curcuit and closed in the off condition. will report back.

Re: 1979 35hp evinrude continued problem

OK problem fixed and here's what was wrong: 1) the engine wire harness was an old one from 1969 and had needed pins where there weren't any in my 90's control. 2) the old engine harness had two chaffe throughs one of which was a short to ground of the kill wire. The fix; I went to my local evinrude repair shop and perchased a used 1995 115hp harness(hp didn't matter) I then used my manuals engine side schematic and wired the new harness in. Anyway the engine starts stops and chokes when commanded making me a very happy camper! I want to thank everyone on the forum for thier help. It was very much appreciated. This is an A-one forum I will highly recommend to alll my boating friends.......Robert
