Sometimes it works fine although it always makes a whirring sound. Someone told me it needs high temp grease on the spindle. Does that sound right?

Sometimes it sounds like it won't turn over but does, or gets slow start. Kinda like a dead battery although it has a new one.

Someone who rebuilds starters told me is was shot after he took it apart. A mechanic who has been fixing them for 30 years said there wasn't anything wrong with it.

Who should I believe? Thanks Bob

Re: 1979 35hp Johnson starter going bad?

Here's what I would do. First, I would put a charger on the new battery. Even though it's new, there's no guarantee it hasn't been sitting on some shelf for a while.

Next I would remove all electrical connections from the battery, solenoid, and starter. I would clean them and make sure they are shiny as well as the lugs they're connected to.

If that didn't help, I would remove the starter and take it to an automotive starter shop here that I have confidence in, and describe the symptoms.

Frequently this type of problem is due to crud on the connections or a bad cable. A cable can look good on the outside and be green soup inside. A starter needs a lot of amps & therefore a good path for those +'s & -'s to move around.
