1979 35HP vs. 1968 40HP - Power Ratings, etc.

I considered looking at a 79 35HP, but am wondering how it will perform on my 14ft saftemate. I once had a 1968 40HP which performed adequately, and maxed out around 26 mph. Given that somewhere along the line the power rating (at propshaft vs. at crankshaft) changed, could I assume that the 35HP would perform similarly to my old 40??

Thanks.

the 35 and 40 were rated under the same system. the ratings didn't change until about 1986 or so (at which time that 35 became a 30).
anyway, the performance of these two if very similar (I've had both on 13 foot boston whalers)
the 40 accelerates stronger, having more cubic inches.
the 35 has the same (or sometime better) top speed, due to a better
gearcase. the 35 revs about 500 rpms higher. if your boat is heavy, the 40
might be better, but with the correct prop on the 35 you should see about the same performance, although in general the 35 idles better, is smoother, and gets
better mileage.

My '84 35hp does 32mph GPS on a 14' Lund that I've added considerable weight to. They go faster because of the better gearcase design. I once had a 33hp (same gearcase as a 40) on the same boat and it was a dog.
