1979 6HP Seahorse fuel problem

I have a 1979 6hp Seahorse and it ran fine the first trip that I had it out. On the last two times out, it ran for a short period and started to die from not getting fuel. If I would pump the priming bulb when it started to die, it would run fine. Could it be the fuel pump or another possible problem?

Thanks for any assistance.

Re: 1979 6HP Seahorse fuel problem

Well I used the linkabove to take the pump apart, clean and put back together and it passed the check at the end of link. It did not pass the check at first. I do have a question. After putting it back on the motor and pumping the priming bulb until it gets tight I noticed fuel coming out of the drain holes on the pump. Is this supposed to do this?

wouldn't think so. common sense says No.
I have a slightly later 6hp no fuel comes out of that. (Pump the same except for the position of the outlet) Not noticed any drain holes but then never had to touch the pump.

Re: 1979 6HP Seahorse fuel problem

Well I rebuilt the fuel pump with a new kit and it still stalls after running for a short period of time. Again, if I pump the priming bulb when it starts to die it will keep running.

Do I have a hole in a fuel line causing me to loose prime or is there another possible problem?

Thanks for all assistance.

The pulse connection for the pump may be blocked

There could be air entering the fuel line, yes. The fuel connector would be the prime suspect.

This is probably a dumb question but what is a pulse connection?

Thanks Vic!!

When you removed the pump did you check and make sure the passage in the block was clean and not restricted, and use a new base gasket?

This is probably a dumb question but what is a pulse connection?

The connection between the crank case and the pump, as referred to by Daviet, that applies the pressure/ vacuum pulses to the pump to make it work.

The gasket between the pump and the crankcase has three holes. The end ones are for the mounting screws, the one in the middle is the pulse connection. Make Sure the hole in the crank case is clear and that you have the pump assembled so that it lines up with a hole in the back.

I just checked the pulse connection and there is no blockage there. Could there be a carb problem?

Thanks guys!!

Carb inlet blockage not likely, but possible.
Fuel line drawing air, Bulb failing, blocked vent in tank.
Double check fuel pump assembly pattern.

Re: 1979 6HP Seahorse fuel problem

Usually if you have to pump the primer bulb to keep an engine running it is a sign of low fuel flow to the carb. If the pump checks out OK you need to go further down the system, the pump might be sucking air downstream of the pump. Check the fuel line from fuel connector to pump. You also have an o-ring in the fuel line connectors, one on the engine end of fuel hose and one on the tank end. Maybe try another tank and line assy. Just thinkin.
