i lost my motor to hurricane sandy and recently picked up a 1979 85 hp johnson from craigslist. i made the mistake of not testing the power trim before installing it on the boat. the trim motor has power going to it but does not appear to work at all, i am trying to remove it while on the boat but can not get to the 3rd screw. does anyone know if it is possible to remove the trim motor without detaching the motor mount from the boat? at this point it seems like my only option but figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. any help would be greatly appreciated!

you can try removing the tnt mounting screws on the side and then it should swing outward and allow you to possibly get the screw driver in there.

Yep, Use a oem manual to identify the removal screws. I believe there are 3 per side, and the tnt unitl slides out of the brackets. I've done it to replace the motor on a couple. Be very careful not to break the bolts. Tap, heat, lube-repeat.

All the bolts have to come out to get the unit off of the mtr. You may also have to loosen the stern brackets.

My friend has the same motor and same problem. Could not remove the back bolt. We have to hoist the motor and remove the transom bolts and plate in order to get to the back bolt.:grumpy:

TNT bolts ? i have this same problem, i cannot seem to get to the back screw without taking the mount off of the boat.
Some one said that i can remove just one of the mounts and wiggle it out. But that is alot of work and I dont want to have to reseal the mount back onto the boat. I took the 6 bolts out of the side, now I am staring at the center pin that will not slide out either way. I can try to wiggle the pump and cylinders but i cannot get to the third bolt.. Any tips ?

On my tilt pump, it gets power, but does nothing. Any idea what might be gone bad inside it? Brushes ? Any help would be appreciated.

What are you doing about yours? Replacing it or repairing ?
