Hi, Just boat a boat that came with a 79' 85HP Evinrude Model-85995R Serial#-J0003138.

The prop on it is junk and couldn't read any numbers off it. They used it for water skiing (boat is an 81' 15ft Glastron SSV-151). All the info I read is the prop is determined mostly by the WOT RPM range set by the Mfg. I am looking for that spec and what the recommended standard prop size would be. My use would be mostly fishing and a little please, not higher speeds (motor size is overkill but came with the boat).

Any help would be great.

Thanks, Mike

Originally, the factory rated the engine to run between 4500 and 5500 rpm. It was hp rated at 5000. Current thinking is to prop the engine to run in the upper end of the normal operating range. 5500-5600. I'd probably start with a 17 pitch prop and then see what kind of rpm's you get with it.

Thanks for all the input.

Selecting the right prop appears to take some trial and error in a range. They are not cheap but at least it seems most places will let to try a few to nail it.

Whats on it now seems wrong by the stamp on it. The only numbers I could find where HH 3441 but that does not match up with anything I've seen as choices. Kid I got it from may have just thrown somthing on it since as I posted, it is junk.

Again, thanks

Prop size and part number should be on the face of the prop right in back of the prop nut spacer. Nothing there?

I took a quick look there and didn't see anything and then saw the HH 3441 stamped horiz. right between two of the blades on the outside. I will take a much closer look at the area around the prop nut.

Thanks.

A lot of prop repair shops will stamp the horn of the prop with initials and numbers to keep them straight as they are being repaired. They don't mean anything.

Instead of creating a new thread with the same question, I just want to double check these numbers above.

I just got a new prop and based on this, WOT at 5,000 RPM is just what it should be. If I increase the RPM up to 5,400, that's still in the safe range but will that shorten the life of the motor?

No, that will greatly reduce the risk of lugging the engine and extend its life.
