1979 Black Max Choke Solenoid Stuck

My boat has been sitting for a couple months and when i tried to activate the choke, the solenoid seemed stuck. i was able to clean some green/ black gunk off of it and it worked fine after that. fast forward a couple weeks and it seems to be stuck again. I cant find much on this issue but i did some troubleshooting. Ive read that constant power to them will cause them to melt? verified that is not this case. There use to be a gas leak which i fixed a couple years ago, so maybe oil residue? My question is what the heck is leaking? can it be cleaned? Ive looked up replacement solenoids and it looks like i just reuse my plunger on the new solenoid. any help will be appreciated.
