I had a boat given to me (Cruisers inc. 19' Tri-Hull to be refurbished) along with a 70HP Chrysler motor. I had the motor in a homemade tank for testing purposes. After a week or so in the tank and running it several times I noticed a bit of oil floating on the water. I know this is normal but at the waterline there seemed to be a quite a heavy build up of a heavy grease like oil sedement.

I drained the tank, cleaned off the motor and drained the oil from the lower unit. The oil in the lower unit was rather thick and it was of a beige cream color.

I've read in different posts that this means there's water getting into the lower unit. I also read in one post that synthetic oil has a tendency to turn this color. I've poured some oil into a glass jar. If there is water present, shouldn't the water and oil separate?

I also noticed that the drain/fill plug and the oil level plug were very easy to remove with a screw driver with very little effort.

I was thinking of refilling the lower unit, changing the gaskets on the plugs and tightening the two plugs (more than they were) and trying it again.

Being new to boating would this be a good start before I tear apart the lower unit and change the seals? Would this be a good start in the process of elimination?

Any input would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Dymo

I don't think you will see the water separate from the oil in your jar. Oil today has all kinds of stuff in it to keep pollutants (i.e. water) in suspension. This keeps at least some oil on all the parts. If the water separated out in the lower unit, imagine what would happen to the gears at the bottom over time.
