Most likely from your description is a spun prop. In other words, the rubber bushing on the propellor has released.

It is intended to protect the gearcase when you strike an object, but can break down over time from age and the heat from the exhaust.

If your propeller is in good shape otherwise, you may want to have it reconditioned. Here is one place you can send it if there's no prop shop near you:
propeller reconditioning

Yeah, if the prop is spun bad enough, it's almost like having the engine in neutral. The prop hub spins, but the blades don't.

To verify that's the problem, you can mark the hub of the prop against the blades with an indelible marker, run it up in water, and check to see if you marks still line up.
But I'd be willing to bet you'll simply be able to see the wrecked hub.

ROBERT METCALFE,

First off, kill the CAPS. That means you are shouting.

Easy test for your prop.

1. Mark a line on the outer prop hup.

2. Mark a corresponding line on the propshaft.

3. Run the engine, in the lake.

4. Check the lines, do they still match up?
