I've seen them in both ways on the bottom cap. Obviously if it was that way before, it'll be OK now.

As for the ss screw seals, are they supposed to be place on the screws prior to sliding them through the crank case head and threading them into the bearing retainer plate? I would assume they would, but since there is no mention of them, I suppose I should be absolutely possitive on their correct placement before hand.

I recieved the clips you sent me today!!!! The last piston is in, heads temporarilly installed, and block ready for crank shaft installation. The only hold up is the verification on the correct placement of the seals on the stainless screws that go in the lower crank shaft head assembly. Am I correct, in that they go between the screw head and crank shaft head? Thanks a bunch!!!................ ALAN

Also......... and I hate to bring this up........ should I, or should I not, apply oil to the connecting rod cap screws before I torque them? The service manual says yes, but others here on iboats say not to. Just curious as to what you would recommend or what has worked well for you in the past. Thanks a bunch!!!................ ALAN

Ok gentlemen............. I am almost ready to seal the crank case. The service manual tells me to clean the crankcase flange with OMC Safety Solvent. My question to you guy's is......... Can I simply use rubbing alcohol in this step, or is this a MUST have product? It also says to keep the gel seal 1/4 inch away from each "labyrinth" seal. Are they referring to the "o" rings on the crank case heads or the actual crank shaft seals or both? Also, do I use sealant on the entire flat area of the crank case or just the outside perimeter of the crank case? The OEM manual doesn't state that the entire flat portion is to recieve the gel seal, but I would assume it is. Is that correct? Should I simply squeeze out a line of sealant, or spread it evenly with my finger on the crank case flange? Sorry for so many questions. You can tell I'm new at this I guess..................... d:) ............... Thanks!!!

That's how we do it, squirt out a line and then spread it out.

So........

It is ok to use the alcohol on the flange right?

And I should seal the entire flat area, NOT just the outside peremeter............ correct?

(What is a "labyrinth" seal? What are they referring to?)

Thanks again Dale..............................ALAN

Re: 1979 Evinrude 140 hp powerhead rebuild questions?

Ok........My first ever powerhead rebuild is complete!!! Here's my diagnosis of what led to the downfall of my powerhead....... I came to the conclusion that this thing was operating with no thermostats installed, the water jackets in the head covers were completely stopped up with deposits, and a faulty carb float adjustment. This ultimately led to stuck and broken piston rings in the #1 cylinder due to extreme carbon buildup. To my surprise, the rings were also sticking in the #2 cylinder as well, but not to the point where they began to break yet. The block was bored .030 on all four holes, polished the crank and rod journals, installed 4 brand new wiseco pistons, 2 new rods, all new bearings throughout, new thermostats, 1 new powerhead seal kit, two carb kits, and one used head. The temperature sensors never shorted the circuit and sounded the alarm for an overheat warning? They are laying on my desk now and awaiting a test to confirm weather they are bad or still good. I still need to check them out if anyone knows of a good way to test them, I'm all ears........or eye's I should say. d:) With all this work finished, however, I still have one major task ahead of me before installing the powerhead back on the boat and I definitely am in need of some pro's pointers!!!!.............. I need to drop the lower unit and install a new water pump kit. Can anyone simplify and break this procedure down for me?
