1979 Evinrude 140 leaky trim cylinders????

Hey again all !!! With my newly rebuilt powerhead nearing the final moments of the break-in period, I am now turning my attention to the leaky trim cylinders. I wanted to consult with you guys concerning the replacement of the seals in the trim cylinders. Is it possible to remove the caps on the cylinders and replace these seals without having to completely remove the outboard from the vessel and dismantle the unit? I understand a special tool is required to remove the caps. Can one be fabricated? Thanks a bunch for any and all replies..............ALAN

Likely that the o rings/wipers in the caps are leaking. You may not have to overhaul the whole unit, just replace the following: piston 553127 oring, piston 122494 wiper, end cap: 32715 backup o ring, 319662 o ring. 2 pcs of each. Most auto parts stores sell spanner wrenches. You can remove and replace the cap without disassembling anything else. When done, cycle the trim 3-4 times then check the fluid level. Activate the locking lever to keep the unit up while you work on it.

Thanks for the help emdsapmgr!!! Where can one find the replacement parts? It appears that the defective o-rings are part number 553127. Could it be possible to repair the leak by replacing ONLY these, or is it necessary to replace all the o-rings in order to replace them? Just wondering if the other o-rings will likely get damaged upon the dismantle. Thanks again!!!..........ALAN

You might want to determine first wether it's a Showa cylinder or Prestolite.

The Showa cylinder will have a keeper nut below the cylinder piston.

There are oring packages available for both cylinders from your nearest dealership.

EDIT: You can see both if you go to the BRP site and bring you model engine up. You can get the part numbers also.

Thanks OBJ............ Are there any external differences between the two whereas I can make a visual confirmation prior to dismantling? I have a parts manual and OEM service manual on hand for parts reference. Thanks again..............ALAN

EDIT: Disregard the last question. I see the difference now. I do not have the Showa's. Mine are the straight "pin" type cylinders. A part number for those kits would be most helpful though, If you have them on hand. Thanks again.............ALAN
