1979 Evinrude 140 Shift rod adjustment?

After pulling the lower unit to replace the water pump it won't shift into reverse. Long story how this happened. Let's just say it was a "stinging" experience....... d ........ and I turned it. Which direction do I need to turn the adjustment to correct this problem after I pull the lower unit again?

Measurement to be taken from the top surface of the lower unit, alongside of the shift rod cover/cap to the center of the shift rod hole.

1979 thru 1981 V/4 models = (L) 21-27/32" - - (XL) 26-27/32" Have shift rod in neutral

I spoke too soon Joe............no go. I've tried one turn clockwise, and one turn counter clockwise and still having no luck with this. At one point it acted like it was trying to engage both forward and reverse gears but just wouldn't go all the way in either way. There has to be something I'm missing here...........Any ideas?
