Hi all. I have finally acquired the proper seals to repair the leaking trim cylinders on my 1979 Evinrude 140hp outboard model #140983. The part numbers acquired are:

End Cap O ring: 319662
Wiper Trim Rod: 122494
Ring Backup End Cap: 321715
Trim Rod O Ring: 326649 (Old Partnumber: 553127)
Piston Trim Cylinder T Seal: 330809 (Old Part numbers: 391622,321580)

Questions:

What is the most effective way to remove the end cap without the "special" tool that is needed? Are there any torque specifications when re-installing the end cap? Thanks for any advice in advance........... ALAN

Going by memory alone, will an adjustable spanner wrench not unscrew the end cap, then use a hook to pull the sleeve out? I believe the trim cylinder end cap is secured at 25-30 ft/lbs

The spanner wrench seems to be the ticket as I recall, but does the sleeve actually need to be removed? Why? Thanks for the quick response.

Weeeew, scared me.....lol....... Also, the end caps appear to be counter sunk. I'm not sure I can use the spanner wrench. Hmmm. Anything else come to mind?

One last question....... Do the trim pistons need to be in the "trimmed down" possition prior to removing the caps? I'm assuming yes, but thought I'd ask to be absolutely certain. Thanks again........ ALAN

Yes, trim fully down. Then drain the system by removing the resevoir plug and drain the fluid into a pan. When complete, TNT fully up and out,re fill, then cycle the system 5 to 6 times to bleed the air, and re fill as needed. Always re fill when fully trimmed up and out.

The tool you need is a face pin spanner wrench. You could buy the OMC brand or you can find one with the correct size pins and it should work.

Another option would be to go to your OMC dealer and have a look at the wrench, then fabricate your own.

Thanks a bunch for your most helpful input!!! That's why I love this forum!!! I found a photo of the wrench on eBay. I'll have a look/see at the local NAPA to see if they have any in stock. Looks like one could insert a couple of steel pins into the holes and then place a wrench between them to loosen the cap....hmmm..... I might try that first before I purchase the tool. Do you have any other suggestions before I begin? Once again......THANK YOU!!!........ Alan

I have added a couple things to previous posts, but other than that, you may also want to change the manual release o ring while you are at it. It is fairly cheap, and if the others are shot, it should probably be changed as well. It is also probably the easiest one to do ;)

Good luck to you, hope all works out well!

This one would work fine for 8 bucks. Just tighten till snug.

Or this is the cadillac model that a torque wrench can be used in conjunction with, although for the do it yourselfer, is a bit much. As stated, torque to 25 to 30 ft lbs.

It appears that the other o rings are in relatively good shape. No problems in those areas at all. The unit only leaks around the trim cylinder end caps. No other problems to speak of. I'll replace the seals I have on hand, first, then evaluate the condition of the seals elsewhere on the unit. Thank you so much for the advice and info. Much appreciated!!!........... ALAN

I have obtained the adjustable face pin spanner wrench and have relieved the system of all the fluids and pressure to the best of my knowledge. However, I still can't seem to remove the end caps from these darn cylinders. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I'm up for anything at this point. Thanks in advance....... ALAN

They should come out, may need some penetrating oil like pb blaster to help. A pipe extension on the end of the wrench may give you more torque if she is being stubborn.

Got 'em!!! The trim unit is now complete!!! I'll have to test it tomorrow for leaks though. One last question for ya........ The "old" seal on the bottom of the piston was sandwitched between two plastic rings. The updated seal was a bit different and I'm not sure if the plastic rings were supposed to be installed on either side of it. Honestly, I don't think they would even fit as I tried to install just one, and couldn't. Please tell me they are supposed to be left out and not installed on each side of this "updated" seal. Any idea? The seal in question is #82 in the diagram here............

Glad you got it!

Im not quite sure what those plastic rings are, hopefully someone will. I do not believe they come with the updated seals.

Evidently they are now obsolete with the upgraded seals. Everything is working fine (on a dry boat anyhow) with NO sign of leakage. Thanks for all your help!!...........ALAN

I am also rebuilding my Trim Cylinders. Where did you purchase the spanner tool? Do you know the model? Thanks

Unfortunately, my end caps were so tight that I had to use a screwdriver and hammer to break them loose. It buggered up one of the pin holes just a bit on each end cap, but I had to do what I had to do. Once I got them broke free, that tool helped a lot on loosening and tightening them back up. Hope that helps!!!!................. ALAN
