Hi, I am restoring a 1979 Evinrude 6hp Model Model 6904E The pull start works OK in that it will pull and turn the motor over and it will also fully retract. The issue is, it makes an awful squealing noise while retracting. Is there any way to lube this or is best route to take apart and clean it.
Thanks

There may be a nylon bushing at the top and bottom.----Lift the gear art top.---Smear some grease.---Grease will work it's way in.----Lay motor on it's side and spray some lube near bottom.

Think I would pull the cord out and hold it from retracting. Spray the cord liberally with WD-40 and let it recoil. See if there is a difference when pulling it again.

Why would you lubricate a piece of rope ?-----Need to know what the poster means by ---" restoring " --this motor.-----Paint and decals or complete teardown and inspection ?----evinrudeparts.ca ---can assist with parts.

Because the piece of rope sprays lube over everything it is close to.

In addition, spray some WD-40 at the bottom of the spool.

(the defense rests.)
