I have a 1979 Evinrude 55 hp and am having a problem getting the engine to start. A few days ago I replaced a corroded wire in the engine.I then ran the engine to make sure that I put everything back correct and after running it I saw smoke coming out of the top of flywheel and smelled something burning. I let it sit about a hour and started it again same result, but this time the rectifier also started smoking and caught fire. I replaced the rectifier and everything then seemed to run ok. So, I took it out to the lake this weekend and the engine wouldn't start the first day. On the second day after changing the spark plugs it started and seemed to run ok for a while but then it suddenly just quit. Today again it would not start. I pulled the plugs again and saw that they are full of fuel. I also noticed that I have some little copper wires falling out of the bottom of the flywheel.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Re: 1979 Evinrude problem

Hi tomcat, welcome to the forums...

What ya' did was let the smoke outta the stator. Not good. Any time ya' let the smoke out....nothin but trouble.

The smoke ya' seen was the stator taking a trip south. Bet if you look good, you'll see goo all over the top of the engine. Pull the flywheel and take a look. Probably toasted the charge coil mounted in the stator. This coil supplies the voltage to the power pack. No big deal to change out. Look real close at all the wiring from under the flywheel. Make sure nothin is bare. Also look at the condition of the flywheel.

Keep us posted.

Your right about the goo. Planning to pull the flywheel tomorrow. Any tips for pulling the flywheel? Other posts I've read talk about using a harmonic balance puller as the way to go.

tomcat...the harmonic balancer should work...take the nut off, use hardened bolts to secure to the flywheel, tighten the puller tight, then rap the end of the puller with a hammer, and wala, it should pop right off...just a thought :)

Do you know what size nut it is? None of my sockets appear big enough.

Re: 1979 Evinrude problem

I finally got the flywheel off today and found what I believe to be my stator toasted. Can someone just confirm that the stator and charge coil that OBJ mentioned above are in the same unit?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I am rather new to owning a boat and want to make sure I get the right part.

Also, anyone know of a good place for parts?

Thanks
