Hey everyone! I may sound stupid asking these questions but this is my first ever boat motor. I had a Johnson 40 that died on me so I picked up a 79' 70 horse to replace her. Bolt pattern matched and I am just gunna hook it up to my old throttle. The key broke off in the ignition so I was thinkin to just hook up some sort of switch between the battery and starter instead. I took a wire strsight from the starter and ground just to see if I could get it to turn over but there was nothing. Am I missing something that needs to be hooked up. I have the big red plug on the motor plugged in. Thanks for the help.

Ignition switch does much more than just activate the starter solenoid. It also operates the choke and connects/disconnets the black wire w/yellow strip to the power pack to ground. Grounding this wire stops the ignition system from producing spark thereby stopping the motor. Don't know which controller you have, but you might want to consider just replacing the ignition switch. Cost you about $18 w/shipping. Just did mine because I only ever had one key for it and the switch had started sticking when starting. Both problems resolved with new switch since it also came with 2 keys.

So I got the motor mounted and seem to have the control cables down. I started it up and it seemed to run well. After turning off the motor and trying to restart it I couldn't get it to start. I noticed quite a bit of fuel leaking from the bottom of the big black plastic box on the front of the motor. What's my problem?

You have a leak at the carbs, fuel line gasket or more than likely a stuck neddle valve. Take off the air box "The big plastic part" that way you can see where it's leaking at. You should probaly rebuild the carbs.

When I turn the key the butterflies close. When I let off the key they open back up and fuel pours out of the hole where the butterflies sit

Could it be an adjustment with the throttle cables? I tried adjusting them myself when I installed the motor but who knows if its right
