1979 mercruiser 228 shutter valves

Engine over heated pulled lower end found burned out pieces seems just one side. But no indication that other valve has disintegrated but not sure I know these shutters are at the bottom of y tube. Pulled port side manifold measure 2&7/8 inch inside diameter can I drill thru y pipe and install shutters just below the rubber boot that is over the manifold

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Donno whether that'll work, or not,....

If ya do it, do it under the rubber coupler(as in behind the rubber, the rubber will seal the holes), as that's where Merc put 'em, when they moved 'em from the bottom of the y-pipe,.....
