Over the next 60 days I am outfitting a new used fishing boat, 1984 Mirror Craft 17 foot center console. I have bought two rebuilt outboards, a 1979 Mercury 700 -70 hp and a 1999 Mercury 9.9 hp (long shaft electric start) - NOT SHOWN.
I am trying to find information on the Merc 700. There doesn't seem to be much "free internet" information on this model

Any recommendation on information source? What are some of the pitfalls of this outboard?

I am looking for a reasonable to cheap for an electric trim. Anyone know what units will fit?

Re: 1979 Mercury 700 - 70HP 2stroke

It a 3 cylinder inline, has ADI ignition, uses NGK BUHW plugs, uses a water cooled fuel pump, needs impeller changed every 2 years, needs 50:1 fuel ratio, does not like to be lugged(over propped), and puts out 60 hp at prop.

If you do not know history/servicing of this engine I suggest you replace plugs, fuel pump diaphram, gear oil and impeller before extended usage. These are good little motors if you keep it propped in the 5500-5800rpm range, what kills these engine is lugging them. You need a trim pump,4 hoses and 2 cylinder to add trim to engine. I recomend you use the 92194A20 cylinder as they are the last and best ones and where used on the 35/45/50/60/75/90/115 hp motors from 1979 and later..

Might just be the angle of the pictures but that motor doesn't look long enough for that transom.

I feel your pain not being able to find info on these motors. I have a 79 model 80hp merc and Have been looking for technical info on the internet for months now. Drives me crazy.

Dunno if it helps but I have a tilt n trim motor from a 90 model merc that is bolted inside the boat under the transom it works really well so far!!!!I hope I havnt jinxed myself now.

the Mercury service manuals have all the info you would ever need. find the correct manual for that engine . they show up on ebay often
