I have a 1979 Johnson 35hp (35el79a that I recently transplanted to my aluminum boat from a donor boat. After re-wiring the engine, controls, and cleaning the carb it fired up with half a turn. But, I didn't see any water coming out anywhere, just some smoke. I only ran it for about 10 seconds, In fear of over heating or something. Does the thermostat open at a certain temp. like a car, or does it constantly pump water? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

barrel, well rubbermaid container.. Is the pee hole coming from the little hose from the side of the head? or the 2 slots on the back of the shaft

Just drop the lower and look at the impeller in there now,It may be in pieces (may not) and could be plugging the system.

On the side of the exhaust houseing (the leg) you'll see a 1 inch X about 3 inch removable plate held on with 2 screws,Remove that plate and inside you 'll see the shift rod, remove the lower bolt. That will disconnect the shift rod letting the lower slide off.
Heres a parts and schematic of that motor http://www.crowleymarine.com/johnson-evinrude/617.cfm

thanks. It looks like someone has replaced the screw that was originally there with a round head flat head. but the coupler and shift rod is toward the front of the engine. Is it ok to pry it back with a screw driver (so it will align with rectangle hole) so i can screw it out or no?

yOU CAN BUT oops, but first make sure you have a couple bolts screwed in just far enough to hold the lower to the exh.housing.So it doesn,t fall and possibly crack. That may align the rod closer to the access hole

Re: 1979 model 35hp Water Pump or Thermostat??

well, i put another water pump in it a few mins. ago (which looked fine) and I'm still having the same prob.. a drop of water out of the hose every 5 seconds.. i thought the copper hose that hooked to the water pump may have not been hooked up at first. Is there anyway that it could have came disconnected at the top? because thats the only thing i can think of...

Only way I know of is to drop the LU and look up the leg. You may have blockage inside your passage way. I would take a garden hose and connect to the copper tube and flush out...

yep, that's exactly what I did. Don't give up you'll figure it out. Pulling the head is not hard if it comes to that.
