1979 OMC 230 (GM305) stalling after 15 min.

Hi,
This is an old boat which has been stored for 8 years. Drive is an OMC 800. I've replaced the fuel pump , and cleaned out the carb, fuels lines are good, tank is clean. From other posts, I thought the problem could be the ignition coil. That has also been replaced. The points seem good. Condenser? - I can't tell.

This problem happens whether in the water or with muffs. Basically everything runs fine for about 15 minutes - then the engine stalls. The first time - in the water - average RPM was about 2500, other times - on muffs - RPM at about 1500.

The only thing that I noticed is that when it stalls, there is some vapour coming out of the spark arrester(the thing on top of the carburetor). Fuel pressure is good at 5 lbs. No specific smell of gas - does not seem to flood.

In my latest test, the engine will re-start, then stall again. If left for a few minutes, it will run longer but eventually stall again.

Does anyone have suggestions as to what may be happening to cause this stalling? What is happening to the engine after 15 minutes to cause this? What else should I check / replace?

If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Thanks, Denis

The carb has many soft rubber parts in it that will go bad (harden) after sitting for a long time as well as the fact that the fuel in the carb will evaporate and leave a gum behind in the carb.

Have the carb rebuilt and I'd be willing to bet the cost of the rebuild that the problem goes away.

First and easiest is after the engine stalls and won't start check for spark at the coil. Might check the vent on the gas tank too. Just after the engine stalls loosen the gas cap and see if you hear a hissing from suction. Also check your fuel pump volume and pressure after it stalls to eliminate any possibility a suction hose could be collapseing. Have you changed your fuel filters?

Thanks for the suggestions:
I've already rebuilt the carburetor, changed all filters, verified that the gas tank vent is OK. Fuel pressure is fine and gas is flowing.

If I press the accelerator pump, gas is there.

I've redone all the fuel lines, pump, carb , etc. I cant see a leak anywhere. I think I am looking more at an ignition issue than a fuel related one.

Keep the suggestions flowing.

Thanks again, Denis.

HI,

Just to close out the thread.

I took out the points and condenser tonight - and guess what: the condenser is split for about 3/4 of its lenght. Couldn't see that without taking it out.

I never did like points and condensers even when that was the only technology available. But they get replaced this weekend - if carquest can fit me up.
