I have a 1979 omc cobra model# 990243s. When I hit the trim, the motor just clicks. I have been looking to find a motor but can not seem to find the part number.

Thank you in advance,

Jason

Tilt motor assembly #0982058 - looks like it's still available HERE.

You might look at just having your current motor rebuilt. They're notorious for gettin' all junked up inside. I've had mine done for less than $50.

BTW - I think you have a mechanical shift OMC Stringer. Don't think they were called Cobras for a few more years.

A 1979 OMC would have been a Hydro-Mechanical Stringer drive. The full mechanical stringer drive unit did not come out until 1980-81. It is definitely not a COBRA.

Also, unless you had the optional trim, there would be a screw jack for the front engine mounts, you do not have "trim'. It would only be tilt and you better not ever use it as a trim adjustment.

Your tilt motor would have been a 3 wire unit as opposed to the earlier electric shift stringer drive 2 wire tilt motor. It is true what southkogs stated. Try to clean it up internal. If that does not work, do not fall prey to buying a cheap substitute. They simply do not develop the necessary torque to get the job done.

Yikes, Boom's right - - I read tilt for some goofy reason. Sorry about that.

I have 2 electric motors, one controls the out drive and just seals the out drive to the exhaust and must be completely down at all times during operation, this one works. The other physically moves the entire front of the engine up and down controlling the entire setup (engine and outdrive) like a teeter-totter. This, I assume, is the tilt and is the motor that you guys are referring to. Here are pictures.tilt 1.JPGtilt 2.JPG

The one in your photos is the trim motor ... that adjusts the attitude of the drive (relative to the boat) while you're running "trimming" out the boat. The tilt motor is the one that raises and lowers the drive for trailering/storage/etc. - Stringer drives are not to be run (except maybe at idle for shallow water use in short durations) tilted up at all, but you can trim 'em at full plane.

Trim motor (in pictures) in front of engine under the jack screw. Tilt motor (not pictured) behind the engine attached to the intermediate drive.

Your front trim motor is the one you're saying is broken ... Part #0982069 (I think) from that same link I gave you above. Looks to be still available.

However, yours looks nice and clean ... look at having it rebuilt at the local parts shop.
