Re: 1979 Starcraft 18 v5 Restoration re model
Hi Dave, Just want to say beforehand that you're doing one of the best if not the best restorations I've ever seen, I've been using just plain outdoor carpet glue, purchased at Menards, 4 gallon pail for about 17.95, seems to work just fine did about 4-5 boats using it, I've had to remove some carpet both from aluminum and wood and it's quite a job, on my current restoration I redid the consoles and had to use an angle grinder to remove the rug, didn't prep the aluminum at all, the same with wood almost had to use a hammer and chisel to remove the rug, way stronger than factory as far as I'm concerned, however I was reading another persons restoration page and he said it only lasted 3-4 years for him so I know you're doing an awful lot of work on your restoration and want it to last so you might want to get a little more advice on this topic and what type of glue you might want to use, as far as installing the rug on the floor I've always cut the rug to length and width rolled it up start at the back applied the glue for about 12 inches set the rug down on the glued part applied another 12 inches of glue and continue the same way till I get to the bow, you will have to cut the rug as you get to the bow but I always leave about 3-4 inches till I'm done putting it all down when I'm done I cut it flush with the outside edges of the wooden floor, also I use just a plain rolling pin roll it all down starting from the back, you can cut your openings after it's dried. I hope this has been of help to you and if I can help in any other way feel free to ask. One more thing and this is only my opinion but I would never do another boat floor with rug, hard to keep clean holds moisture, but it's your boat and I know you're going for an as original restoration as possible and rug definitely look's better. Awesome!!! job Dave
