Re: 1979 Starcraft 18 v5 Restoration re model

Hi Dave, Just want to say beforehand that you're doing one of the best if not the best restorations I've ever seen, I've been using just plain outdoor carpet glue, purchased at Menards, 4 gallon pail for about 17.95, seems to work just fine did about 4-5 boats using it, I've had to remove some carpet both from aluminum and wood and it's quite a job, on my current restoration I redid the consoles and had to use an angle grinder to remove the rug, didn't prep the aluminum at all, the same with wood almost had to use a hammer and chisel to remove the rug, way stronger than factory as far as I'm concerned, however I was reading another persons restoration page and he said it only lasted 3-4 years for him so I know you're doing an awful lot of work on your restoration and want it to last so you might want to get a little more advice on this topic and what type of glue you might want to use, as far as installing the rug on the floor I've always cut the rug to length and width rolled it up start at the back applied the glue for about 12 inches set the rug down on the glued part applied another 12 inches of glue and continue the same way till I get to the bow, you will have to cut the rug as you get to the bow but I always leave about 3-4 inches till I'm done putting it all down when I'm done I cut it flush with the outside edges of the wooden floor, also I use just a plain rolling pin roll it all down starting from the back, you can cut your openings after it's dried. I hope this has been of help to you and if I can help in any other way feel free to ask. One more thing and this is only my opinion but I would never do another boat floor with rug, hard to keep clean holds moisture, but it's your boat and I know you're going for an as original restoration as possible and rug definitely look's better. Awesome!!! job Dave

Actually that is plastic trim not aluminum bought some pieces along with other parts from a guy that bought out all the parts from a boat manufacturer that closed up, cut out the openings for the stereo and the switches, the floor is marine grey vinyl very close to same color of the carpet, hope this is of some help and good luck with your project.

Sorry misunderstood your question that is the origional aluminum trim if you look at some earlier pics you can see it, thought you were talking about the trim on the switches and stereo

Again, your carpet and upholstery look great! Too bad you aren't local I'd pay you to install my vinyl floor and carpet on the hull sides. I got everything to do it just waiting on warmer weather as I have solvent based adhesive. Prolly blow my garage up if I did it with the heat running....

What's the new paint scheme going to be?

Thanks Dj Thanks Glen, I want to paint it all black like the 2012 Starcrafts, and get some decals made, there's a pic of one a little earlier in my thread, but I want the underside to be black as well like the new Starwelds, just not sure if I'm going to paint it myself or pay someone to do it, I've put a lot of work into it so far and don't want to spoil it with a lousy paint job.

Hey Bud, I haven't lived in Manitoba for a lot of years, but like us in Sask you probably have gravel to almost all the lake you go to, and that is real hard on paint. Have you given any thought to stripping and polishing just the bottom of the hull, and paint the black from the chin up, on the water you would never know the bottom isn't painted and it would look good for a lot longer. Just my 2 cents

Actually Glen that sounds like a really good idea, It's kinda late for me to turn the boat completely over as I've done the inside and installed the windshield and rails, but was thinking of turning it on it's side and painting one side at a time, but I could do the same thing and strip and polish the underside, thanks a lot Glen that's some really good food for thought.
