I have recently acquired an 1979 18' yarcraft that has some issues. A lot of it is in the mercury 900 motor it's self which seems to do nothing but backfire when we attempt to start it. I've recently bought the repair manual for this motor and am about to get into it and see what the issues might be. The compression tests at 135 lbs on all 6 cylinders so that means the issue probably is not internal, I do have spark and the carberators do fill with fuel so this leaves only a hand full of things left to be the cause of the issue.

A couple other things that were unusual about this boat was the prop it had a 2 blade prop (I'm not sure of the pitch or any of that) as I was certain this was not correct I ordered a replacement from eBay which has a pitch of 24 tho after doing a bit of reading and research a pitch of 21 to 23 is recommended....I'm not sure how the 24 pitch prop will effect things (I'm new to this whole boat scene however am mechanically inclined for things like vehicles and such).

Re-decking the boat is also in the plans as half of it seems rather soft and spongy but I'm not sure what kind of wood to redeck with was thinking weather treated walmanized plywood or something to that effect.

Any ideas suggestions or feed back on anything I halve said would be great as I'm not 100% sure what I'm doing exactly when it comes to things like pitch and props or material selection for this kind of purpose.

Thanks in advance for your replies

Welcome aboard

actually, the motor is the easy part. the soft deck means that the transom and stringers have long since rotted away

read link #14 http://forums.iboats.com/forum/boat...r/295740-how-to-s-and-other-great-information

your in for a bit more than replacing the deck, you are in for a full hull restoration. the stringers and transom are the structure in your hull. if you simply "redeck" the 90 hp will rip the transom right off your boat

no on to the motor. most likely the motor is not getting enough fuel. this is called a lean sneeze. usually the result of the carburetors needing to be cleaned and then linc-n-sync'd
