1980’s Evinrude - Temp Warning System?

Hey fellas - question…….I picked up an early 80’s 25hp Evinrude and since I don’t know the service history changed the impeller and did a carb job. It ran well and pumped water when I bought it but figured having it in its best condition to start the year doesn’t hurt.

What I’m wondering - is there any kind of overheat warning on these old smaller outboards? Even some kind of whistle as it starts to get too hot/etc?? I’m assuming not and you just watch for good water flow from the motor. The only thing I’m concerned about is I had to modify the impeller slightly to accommodate for the older style “key” on the driveshaft. Everything seemed to work out like I hoped but in the event the key ever sheared and the impeller stopped turning while I was out cruising - is there any warning system to an overheat situation??

Thx guys.

Model # of your motor?---Why did you not install the correct impeller.-----A new impeller every 5 years is the way to go.----Some electric start models did have a warning horn.

It’s the right impeller - it was aftermarket so the notch for the driveshaft key was just slightly smaller meaning I had to file a bit to match it. This was a new to me motor this past fall which is why I went a did all the servicing…..and everything seems to work just fine and will be tested in the spring. But I was just curious if there might be something to notify of an overheating condition should there be an issue with what I’ve done.

I can’t say exactly what model it is since the tilt assembly is from a different motor - and I think that’s the only location of the VIN/Model#. However I do know based on a few other things (Color, decals, etc) that it’s likely a 1985 25hp Evinrude - basic tiller model/manual shift/etc. No frills, so I assume nothing to warn me just me checking and watching proper water flow.

If you bought one of the $8 impellers off of Ebay/Amazon, good luck with that. Not an item I would trust in any of my motors.

I figured there wouldn’t be anything I’m missing but thought I may as well ask. So I’ll just keep an eye on it while I’m running it for the first few times for flow and check the powehead to make sure it’s not excessively hot to the touch. I’m not that concerned about the impeller since it wasn’t the cheapest of the cheap and the quality of the rubber/design seems fine…..just came with a square key notch vs an older rounded style key so some mods were necessary. I’ve got the old as a spare/just in case backup as the fins weren’t notably cracked if I were in a pinch and will likely change it again in a couple years depending on usage.

Thx gents.

Model # of your motor ?
Is there anywhere else on the powerhead itself to find that info Racerone?

The tilting/transom assembly has been changed from a different unit - - so I can’t trust the plate/model/VIN information from there. I don’t know anything about the history of it outside the color of the cover/cowl/midsection and decals - similar to the photo attached.

It’s not a big deal, I can do my due diligence and watch for the the usual checks on it while running.

Post a picture of the cylinder head of your motor.---Close up.-----Is there a location for a sensor switch ?----Should be easy to spot on a 1985 model.

Mount & hook up a few of these on a piezzo buzzer !

chose 60 (140 F) or 70 C (158F )
normally open contacts will close when hot.
