I just got this little 4.5HP Evenrude and the guy who sold it to me said he replaced the water pump and the rebuilt the Carburetor. The motor starts up in two or three pulls and says running no problem. It even runs well on low but when you give it full throttle it speeds up for a minute or so then it kinda dies out like it's choking or flooding the motor. If you let off the gas and kinda feather it a little it goes back to idle and you can speed back up a little. This is my first boat motor so any ideas or help is much appreciated.

Also I have been reading the forum and I see how to identify your motor but i cant find the sereal number on the motor. Any ideas where they hid it?

Re: 1980 4.5 HP Evenrude

last thing first.
The serial number should be on the same plate as the model number on the transom bracket.
Both should also be stamped on a core plug (a disc about 3/4" diameter) somewhere on the power head.

It sounds as though it is either suffering from fuel starvation, rather than flooding, or a carb that is still not clean.

Do you have an integral tank R and RL models or a remote tank RH and RHL models.

Tank vent ?? on either.

Will pumping the bulb help if its a remote tank.

will choking it a bit help

Fuel filter clean?

If only an integral tank check you have a good fuel flow.

those motor have the fixed high speed jet in the bottom of the pick up tube, it is probably clogged, starving the motor of high speed fuel.

The fuel tank is in the housing with the motor and the gas cap does have a vent and is open. I don't see a bulb to pump anywhere and it dies when I choke it even at half choke. The other thing is it has a 1/2 gal tank on it and it seems to be going though gas very fast (This is why I was thinking flooding).

I just ran out and got a Clymer Evenrude / Johnson shop manual so I will check the Fuel filter and see if I can find the high speed jet and make sure thats not clogged.

Diagram of the carb HERE just in case its not in your Clymer manual.

#4 and #19 are the jet and pickup tube that TD refers to

There's a fuel filter in the pipework coming away from the fuel tank.

Can you guys tell me how to look up the serial number on my motor or maybe one of you can look it up.

Model E5RCS
Serial# E0002826

Also I live in an APT so I'm waiting to get this 55gal drum to start working on it. But as soon as I do I will let you know what I find.

Sorry tashasdaddy I have a book for the motor and I found how to code the model number. I just did not know if there was anyway to look up the serial number to see if I could get a title or who the previous owner was. I'm not even sure if that possible or if this motor came with a title back in 80.

many states do not have titles on outboards, you can go to the Texas authorities and they should be able to tell you, if it was titled in Texas before.

Blimp that link was most helpful.

The only thing is that the serial number on the motor is titled for a 77 35HP Evenrude and not the 80 4.5HP power plant that?s actually there.
