I just got a seaking by crystler a few days ago. I've been messing around with it the past few days to get it running. The original gas tank mounted on top of the motor is full of rust inside. I purchased a small 3 gallon external tank and added a primer bulb to the line and plugged it in at the card. I cleaned the carb up as best I could with carb cleaner. Once I put everthing back together I can get it to start up. Everything seems to be working as it is peeing water out the shaft and all. It won't stay running for more than a minute or so. Seems like its not drafting the fuel or something. When I prime it up to get the primer bulb hard... I have noticed it won't stay hard. If I lightly prime while its running it will stay running longer. If I don't then it will eventually hit high RPM and shut off... Kinda like a weedeater does right before it runs out of gas. Any suggestions on what I can do? Can these motors be converted to an external tank? I have ordered a carb rebuild kit to rebuild the carb to see if that will help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

model number is VWB52004B
gas mixed at 50:1
new spark plug

Well im not familiar with your motor but with a tank mounted on top of the motor tells me the fuel is gravity fed. If you can hold the external tank above the motor it may run better. Now in the carb itself there may also be a small diaphragm that helps to keep the fuel flowing and may need replacing. Also is there a vent of some sort on the external tank? You will want to make sure it is open.

No fuel pump on that motor.Tank above the motor and short hoses to the carb.
You might be able to convert it but finding another tank would probably be easier.
Or they sell a tank sealer. It's like a liquid fiberglass(key work like). It coats the inside and encapsulates the rust.Try a small paper filter on the line after you clean it good.J

I find it odd that it's full of rust. I may be wrong, but as I remember, they were aluminum when I was working on them. Maybe they "improved" them in later years and made steel ones?? Or maybe my forgetter is working better than my rememberer.

hahahahaah good one F_R. :D Yea, I would look into geting a replacement tank. Some of those off brand motors were set up to take external tanks, as well as having built in tanks, but the fuel pumps were so weak that they still didn't work. Most motors with built on tanks didn't have a need for fuel pumps, but there were a few motors built with small fuel pumps and you could hook up an external tank, if you chose to use one. These tiny fuel pumps just didn't have the strength to pull fuel from the tank, so the external tank option wasn't used much. If your tank has a lot of rust in it, then you may want to make sure your carb is clean, before you run it.

ended up getting the tank kit off the kbs site... www.kbs-coatings.com this worked like a charm to fix my original gas tank. Got it running now but seems to be overheating. It is peeing with the hose hooked to it so i'm stumped now. Any suggestions?
