Hey everyone

My buddy has a 1980 50HP Mercury (can't find the model number right now) and just installed a new Sierra ignition switch.See link for it's specs please.

http://www.teleflexsierra.com/MP410...*****.315776076--store_id.373--view_id.491891

It starts fine but for some reason won't turn off when he turns the key back.
Has to kill it buy taking it off the battery.

I have the book for that engine but I'm in NY right now and can't help him with a wiring schematic. I went on Crowleymarine but couldn't find a RemoteControl section with a diagram.

If you could tell me were each wire goes that would be great, I think there are 7 posts on this switch. I think he has most of the wiring right but it would help to know every wire to narrow it down. Then again it might be something small like 1 or 2 wires not it the right place.

Thanks,
DamianJP

I think that if you ground the black/yellow wire it will kill the motor. So when in the off mode you should see a dead short between the black wire and the black/yellow wire.

I tried to look at the key that you linked to, but the AH who set up that site have locked non-USA people from seeing it. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I really HATE places that do that.

Ok, the upshot is that I suspect that key is NOT for use with an outboard engine (no linking between a the kill wire and ground when the key is OFF, as Dave said). Why didn't he get the genuine Merc part. They aren't too expensive and you know it will work.

Hey achris

Sucks about that site, don't know why they do that. Would **** me off too.

Yeah I'll ask him to see if the genuine and the non-genuine have the same number screw posts and try to see if it's the same one. Might have to get the same Merc part like you said though.

But he told me the Genuine Merc switch he needed was $60.
The non-Genuine sierra was $18.
Thats why he went with sierra.
Can he get the genuine merc switch for cheaper, if so where?

Thanks,

There are several different switches that Merc used over the years. A picture of the control box would help me find the part number of the switch and then be able to source it properly.

There are usually very good reasons why the so-called replacements made by 'fly-by-night' companies (yes, I consider sierra a 'fly-by-night') are so much cheaper. Quality is the foremost, and compatibility is another. More often than not the same parts just aren't the same.... (seen it too many times).

Thanks again Chris

I'll try and ask my friend if he can find a part number off the old switch, so you could match it up. Hopefully we can find one closer to $18 than $60 :D
Gonna call him up now and see.

Hey

Finally got it.
Had the black/yellow on AUX post.

Put black/yellow on one magneto post and black on the other magneto post on the sierra switch and BAM, she stops at the off/choke postion.

Thanks for the help (again) ;)

Thanks,
DamianJP
