I just got a 70 hp johnson it had a bad coil and had sat for three years I replaced the coil and checked spark great on all cylinders. Compression 110-115 on all three. Motor starts right up idles fine. When I advance the idle, she dies. I noticed the timing base will not slide easy so the timing won't advance. How do I grease the base and what I really need is the link & sync on this motor. Any one can help or send pm for this it would help shops are closed and wanted to fix this. thank you all, any comments welcome.

Sounds like it's a tad lean on the slow jets, as for the advance, take a look at the pivot points, pull the cotter pins on the links and work the distributor back and forth maybe you can suirt some oil up in the bearings without dismantling the distributor.

pulling the flywheel does not mess up the timing, but the flywheel nut has to be retorqued. the woodruff key keeps it in time. have you cleaned and rebuilt the carbs, that sounds like your other problem. flywheel has to be pulled properly.

PULLING FLYWHEEL

you need a harmonic balancer puller, you need 3 - #8 harden bolts, that fit the 3 holes in your flywheel. standard hardware store bolts will strip out, causing more problems. loosen the flywheel nut, leaving it on so it protects the thread. thread the bolts in 7/16 of an inch. then tighten the puller, adjust so it has a straight pull. now tighten the puller, rap the center bolt with a hammer, then tighten some more. you may have to let it sit over nite, and repeat in the morning. this is a compression fitting, it will eventually POP!!. do not loose the woodruff key that goes in the groove of the flywheel and the crank shaft. then installing the flywheel, it has to be totally clean, no oil, woodruff key in place. then torque the nut to the specifications for your particular motor. if you do not do this, the woodruff key with shear, and you will be repeating these steps.

torque 105-120 ftlbs.

work it, use some mineral spirts, to clean the crud out from under the timing plate.

Re: 1980 70hp link & sync

Please keep us posted on how things go. I have the exact same issue with the exact same motor and I'm getting no-where with it.
My timing base moves freely though and the timing seems to be advancing correctly, but the motor will not idle with the throttle blades closed, and my carbs are completely clean (checked twice). I tried to do a link n' sync last weekend but without a stable idle to begin with you get no place.
I did replace a bad coil and thought I'd found part of my problem but I'm still without a reliably running motor.

I have the 1981 70hp OMC instructions for a link-n-sync in pdf form, if anyone needs them.

TODDO1,
Yes, can you send them to my private message box? I have a 1983 Johnson 70 horsepower, model# J70ELCTE that I would like a copy of the lync and sync instructions. Thanks, Bob:)
