1980 9.9 Evinrude propeller shaft play

I just finished replacing seals and bearings on the propeller shaft. Once I reassembled everything, the end of the shaft (prop end)has a very slight side to side slop. There is no in/out slop, only side to side. Is this normal? I am pretty sure I bottomed out the bearings. The forward bearing had a lip inside the bearing carrier that stopped the bearing when it bottomed out. The rear bearing had no such lip to stop it. It just had a spot where the inner diameter of the carrier increased in size. I tapped in the bearing until the edge of it was flush with this ring just like it was before I removed it. Maybe wear on the shaft itself is causing this play? I didn't check this before the teardown so I don't know if this condition existed before the new bearings and seals.

Hey RudeRunner....welcome aboard!

Can you tell us how slight the side to side play is? Is it the same up and down? Are ya' sure the prop shaft isn't bent?

Oh, I'd say the play is 1/32" or less in all axial directions.

1/32" is huge. A few thousandth's is max.

The only way that can happen is if you've got the wrong bearing in there somewhere. Not likely you've got that much wear (unnoticed) on the propshaft. If you've replaced bearings it's possible someone mismatched something at the parts counter...
- Scott

Well, the bearings have the exact same part number. They went in perfectly. I'll check again, I may be exaggerating the amount of play.

Try using a dial indicator to measure runout in 0.00n"

I seems to move side to side a couple of thousands at most. It's about the same amount of in-out movement of the propeller shaft.

I guess it would be easier to answer my question this way...should the shaft be rock solid and not move at all? Because if it is, then mine definitely has a problem. It moves in and out a thousandths or two and wiggles side to side in any direction a thousandths or two. I don't think it's a problem but I'd feel better knowing if this is normal or not. I don't want to ruin my new bearings, seals, shaft, etc.
