Hi all, I recently bought a 1980 bayliner with a 1979 Yamaha 115 hp outboard. Took it out for the first time and it runs well but when I go wot the boat wants to go right and giving left correction makes the boat seem to skip. The guy I bought the boat from removed the motor and repainted it. I was wondering if the motor was not perfectly centered could this be the cause? This is my first boat so any help is greatly appreciated.

Move the trailing edge of the trim tab in the opposite direction that the boat pulls. In your case, turn it to the left just a smidge.

My addled brain just remembered why you turn it in the SAME direction as the boat wants to go: The trim tab won't move the boat, it will move the motor/outdrive to that direction, which makes the boat go the opposite way.

EXACTLY, sort of. If the rear of the engine/drive is forced left it's going to turn the boat left (or in other words counter the tendency to turn right).

NO, that's backwards. The boat wants to go right so the rear of the engine needs to be forced left a bit to counter that. To force the engine left the trim tab needs to go right.

Anyway, it's a trial an error thing. Just keep track of where you start and how much you move the trim tab. If you make it worse go the opposite direction.

Ok. So I am to move it to the right to start with and make small adjustment until it gets better. If it gets worse go the other way. Remembering my original starting point. Thanks.

Did I give bad advise? Oops, I was so sure about that.
