1980 Evinrude 140hp Problem HELP!!!

I have a 1980 envinrude 140hp motor that i have been rebuilding, about 2 weeks ago i finally got it to start, but it would not start with the throttle in neutral position, i had to push the throttle all the way up to have it in high RPM's to start the engine, i found that the selonoid that has to click when i turn the key was bad and replaced it. Then i put in new wiring to all my electrical system because the person i bought it from had left the boat sitting for a long time. When i finished all the electrical work I then proceeded to take a voltmeter and check to make sure everything had electricity running well and they did. Finally comes the part where I start the engine again, but it doesn't, the engine proceeds to turn over and create combustion, but it doesn't start. I then tried to start the engine like i did previously by putting the the throttle all the up for high rpms. It didn't start like that i kept trying and trying until all my batteries died out. Can anyone shine some light on my situation. PORQUE NO SE QUE COJONES VOY ACER YA!

Are you activating the choke mechanism? Be sure to push in on the key when you turn the key to start. As long as the key is pushed in, it will inject extra fuel for cold starts. Hold it in for 5-8 seconds. After you crank the engine, pull out a couple of spark plugs. If it is getting gas, the plugs should be wet. If the plugs are wet, but it won't start, you may have no spark.

Hey Guys so I did everything and it all seems to be fine. Today I tried starting the engine after all the pre-checks and tests but it still won't start. What happens is the following:

1. I pull out the throttle and lock it in neutral and push it forward.

2.I put the key in and push it in to activate the selonoid/choke button, and hold it for about 5-8 seconds.

3. I then proceed to try and start the motor.

The batteries are brand new and fully charged the engine cranks with tremendous force, but after it creates the combustion and the starter falls down it doesnt fully overturn it just stops. There is alot of smoke after the combustion coming out the exhaust and everything seems to be fine, but it just won't start is there anything i may be missing???

Pushing the key in is largely ineffective on your motor unless done while cranking the engine.

The fuel will probably reach the intake manifold, but you need the vacuum created by the pistons to move the fuel through the engine to the firing chambers at the same time. Click the thumbnail for typical owner's manual instructions for cold starting.

Depending on which remote control you have, your motor should have a neutral safety to prevent starting unless the remote is in neutral. Use the warm up lever until the engine is running smoothly, then lower it and shift.

Hey Ezeke so i just tried what you said but it was a no go, now the part i was alittle confused about and you have to forgive me im still fairly new to the operations of a boat, was the neutral safety thing you were explaining. I have a single lever control and there are 2 ways of having it in neutral it either stays in the middle or you can pull the lever out into the neutral lock position and push it forward depending on how high you wanna raise the rpm's if I am correct. All in all the motor is still not starting it continues to crank and when it creates the combustion the starter falls down thinking the engine is gonna start but it doesn't.

Some of the flush mount controls are like yours and that's fine.

The starting problem sounds like you are firing less than all four so you get enough speed to drop the starter pinion but not enough to keep the engine running. Try continuing to hold the key pushed in longer, then tap it if it seems to be stalling.

You have to be turning 300 RPM to get full fire for a cold start, so be sure that the battery is fully charged and that the cables are good.

Feel the battery cable terminals after you crank; if they are hot, you may have corrosion inside the cable covering.

hey guys!!!! It finally started. Now here's my next question, I have to start the engine with my single lever control pulled out to lock in on neutral and push it all the way up so that it starts in high RPM's and then i lower it alittle but i cant lower it to neutral because everytime i do so it stalls out, could this be a timing problem if not what else?

Watch the engine while someone advances the control arm from neutral to forward. The first movement that you should see at the engine end is the timing being advanced, not the throttles. Both are controlled by the throttle cable.
