1980 Evinrude Starts & runs fine out of water but wont run in water???????????????

i am triing to help a friend get his boat running its a 1980 Evinrude 50hp model E50Elcsr. It will start and run fine out of water with or without muffs, but when you put in water it just dies and wont run at all, any ideas??? thanks

are the exhaust relif holes clogged? u said it will run with out without muffs? is that meaning you ran it without water??? not a good idea

If we put it in the water and it would die, and then we would pull it out of the water and try to start it and it would start up after a few trys and run for a 30 seconds until we shut it off, but in the water it would just start up and die.... that is what i meant by running it with no muffs, but when at home we put muffs on it and it would start right up and run and shift into gear and not die..

did you check compression and spark? im having a similar problem and i think ive narrowed it down to either one of those.. that could be why it wont run under load...

it has spark i will check compression on it, but it wont evan idle in the water, i never got it off the trailer, just start it up and try to let it idle to warm up and just dies, open throttle and it still dies...
