I can't believe you stole my boat and gutted her like that?! Am I on that tv show 'overhaulin'? Was I not supposed to see this until it was done? :D

Prepare for disappointment! This boat is being overhauled by a lone ranger with a very limited budget. It will not be done in 7 days, but I plan to be burning gas this summer. :)

I have been looking forward to making this post. I got the floor glassed in! :)

Been out of town quite a bit, slowed down the progress. Glad to get a chance to get some things done on the project.

Next step, getting the hull back onto the refurbished trailer, and putting the cap on, and all the outdrive and motor stuff that I hope I can figure out. Any sage advise is welcome.

Weather warmed up a bit, melted off the snow. Time to put the cap back on. Had my son and wife give a hand.

100_3583.jpg

This part was pretty easy, hook up the cable and crank it up onto the new bunks.

100_3586.jpg

Did not paint or repair the vertical bars on the trailer, not sure that they fit this boat correctly, will check it out later.

I finished up removing the old interior pieces, put them straight in the trash, rotten junk.

100_3598.jpg

Now the fun began. I have a fairly small engine hoist, to use on this project. Need to lift the front of the cap up. Made a jack pad which will capture the top of the lift arm. Worked ok, but I did not really trust it.

100_3600.jpg

100_3602.jpg

Wheeled the hull into place, slowly.

100_3608.jpg

I think that's the picture limit.

Now the fun began. Getting the cap into place took the whole team.

100_3609.jpg

Had to raise the back end, these milk crates have had lots of use on this project.

100_3611.jpg

Pushed it into place and used a scraper to shoe horn the cap over the hull. The hull had opened up about 2 inches toward the front.

100_3625.jpg

Back into the shop, looking bigger, and like a boat!!:)

Have to finish up the bilge area, put on the gimbal housing. The engine is just sitting there needing to be installed.

Re: 1980 Galaxy, 19' open bow, hull-up rebuild w/ pics

I put 4 coats of bilge coat paint on the bilge area, looks much better.

I had to figure out a flapper valve for the bilge area. The area has a poorly formed cutout, which had a poor fitting, worn out valve in it, which I tossed out with the other stuff when I cleaned out the hull.
I decided to glue in a piece of dark Lexan, which I had laying around, over the cutout area, and put a small flapper valve over a 1/2 inch hole in it.

100_3641.jpg

The flapper valve is for a livewell pump. This may not be the best idea, but I had to get something going. If there is a better product, I have not found it yet, please let me know if you have an idea.
Glued the Lexan in with silicone, not a permanant fix, still looking for that.

100_3643.jpg

With the valve installed. I am sure it will keep water from getting back under the deck, but still let it out, if needed.

Back at it, after another delay. Had to go to Nebraska for 2 weeks, business. Went to frequent poster Ziggy's hometown, lonesome place for a boater. Lots and lots of cornfields.

Painted the full transom with 3 coats of Bilgecoat, nice hi gloss finish.

Used my new alignment/bearing installation tool and put a new gimbal bearing into the housing. Took some pretty stiff pounding to get it into place.

It took 4 up and down cycles to get the engine sitting in place. You can see the bolts below the rear engine mounts in this picture. They had to be removed.

100_3685.jpg

Had to get Mrs. Bendie to help with the install, Bendie Jr. was not available.

100_3686.jpg

After much more work than it took to pull it out, we got the engine in place, mostly. Finally ended up putting 3 large washers under the rear engine mounts, to lift up the rear of the engine, in order to get the alignment tool in place. Figure the old engine mounts have sagged upwards, over time. Impossible to get a good picture of this.

100_3688.jpg

I am starting to think I might get this thing running pretty soon.

The gas tank is just sitting in place, deciding how to secure it in place. Not putting any holes in this floor...
Except for the big one I made right in front of the forward engine mount:mad:. I had glassed up 2 nutplates to bolt down the mount with. All was good until I left a bolt screwed in, and stepped on it. Nice new 3 1/2 inch hole, should be easy to fix.

Thanks for all your work in documenting your efforts...This is my first question online and it's the same as yours. Wondering if you have any ideas on what you could "pour in" to raise the bottom to prevent an area of standing water/engine droppings. Is there a materal that your aware of? Thanks again for taking the time to doc your fine work.....Mike

Lambo, thanks for posting up. Been out of town again, for 2 weeks. Work sometimes gets in the way of hobbies. I am a rookie at this boat stuff, and I could not think of any fix for the high bilge drain hole, that would not be worse than leaving it alone. Will see how this works out if I can get this old tub on the water.

Not sure what you're doing with the flapper valve but nothing of that design should be used below the waterline. They leak.
Silicone has no place on boats, use 3M 4000 or 5200 marine sealant.
Especially keep the silicone away from the new transom or it will surely ruin it.

This boat had a round check vlave installed in that area, to let water out from under the deck, into the bilge. Old valve was busted up, no picture. I have been looking for a similar replacement part, could not find anything. I concider this a temporary "fix" untill I can locate, and properly install a correct part.

Ahh ok, so its inside the boat, an internal valve, theres no big deal just leaving a hole either as long as the wood is sealed.
Get yourself a couple of decent bilge pumps, install one with an auto switch mounted 3 inches higher than the one on the hull to prevent splashing flicking the auto switch, the constant on/off is what burns them out. Wire the auto switch directly to the battery.
Diagram below is from a marine surveyor.;)

Re: 1980 Galaxy, 19' open bow, hull-up rebuild w/ pics

Been working on hooking up the wiring, it's been hacked up pretty good over the years. Here is the original inst. panel.

100_3707.jpg

A look behind it, at the wiring. The intent of these pictures is to show what I see, mayhem and madness. Not sure I captured it.

100_3708.jpg

100_3711.jpg

The back end is a bit rough too.

100_3715.jpg

Went shopping on Ebay, while I was stuck out of town. Bought some "new but kind of old" guages, $90. They look great.

100_3713.jpg

Been sorting out the wires, got most of it figured out. We'll see when I hook up the battery and do the smoke test. Using a downloaded manual for a 1985 Mercruiser 470, closest I could find to 1980.

Re: 1980 Galaxy, 19' open bow, hull-up rebuild w/ pics

Been working on the wiring, have had to verify and connect each circuit, slower progress than I hoped for but it is fun work. Have the new gauges installed and wired.
Made 2 mounting plates for the front seats, put threaded inserts in the bottom of a piece of 3/4 ply, and CSMed the top. Stuck them down with PL adhesive, no holes in the deck. This picture is supposed to show them, not the best shot.

100_3729.jpg

100_3730.jpg

Put in gas tank attach points, no holes in deck here either. Notched bottom for a attach strap, picture of installed tank next post.

100_3734.jpg

Next step is to put on the outdrive and start this thing up. So I pulled it out of the garage today... Almost got very interesting. Had the wife help. The driveway has a slight angle down from the garage, we pushed the boat, minus engine, in quite easy. On the pushout, as soon as it got to the slope it was pulling me out with it, skidding. Wife got it stopped, just. This thing is much heavier with the engine installed, WOW!

100_3741.jpg

Glad to get it out of the shop, weather is getting nice here.

Making progress. Boat is in the "ready to go" position.

100_3741-1.jpg

Wiring to gauges is done, big job.

After several attempts, the engine decided to start and run, seems to run pretty good, very low speed. The original starter (Prestolite) decided to quit the game on day two. After some checking around I decided that it was obsolete, and bought a Bendix style starter, that seems to be applicable to every boat engine there is.

While I was waiting the this part to arrive, I decided to pull out my old Mercury Mark 5 outboard (1955). I have had this about 10 years, tuned it up, but have never ran it. Started right up and ran nice, in a bucket. Was nice to have something working.

100_3748.jpg

So I put on the new starter and this old engine starts up great, runs nice. Have been checking things out on it for about four days. Only issue is the new (slightly used) tachometer does not work. Think it will take a new indicator to get it working.

A look inside.

100_3744.jpg

100_3745.jpg

I plan to take it out pretty much like this for the first run, soon.:)

Nice work!! Is that a radio tower in the first picture? A few comments you made makes me think you are also a ham....

No tower there, think you see the legs for a big wooden swing set, in the back yard. Not a ham either, although.....:D

Oh well - One thing you said that made me thing so was mentioning the 'smoke test'. I do a fair amount of buildings radio kits, so I hear the term often.

Great job on the boat....I'm working on my own as well....in the middle of a transom repair.
