I'm looking at a 1980 grady white 240 offshore. It comes with a new(ish) engine and trailer. Of course, I'm going to get a mechanic to look at the engine and maybe a survey. The price is good. The gel goat is chalky and there is some pitting in the anti fouling paint. My questions: anyone have experience with these boats, your comments and when is a boat too old? Also, is fuel tank corrosion a problem with these boats? What other issues do these boats have? Thanks

Re: 1980 grady white

I know that Grady's are good boats and I still see quite a few older ones still on the water. If they are taken care of, they will last nearly forever.

I can't comment on the condition of the gel coat of exactly what you could do about it, I will let some of the more seasoned boat veterans tackle that one, and the gas tank issue.

Other than that, a general survey of hull condition, floor, transom, overall appearance and sea trials are in order before you decide to buy. Good Luck.

A boat is too old when you place a FOR SALE ad in a whole bunch of places and NOONE calls :D

Hmmm, I'm looking at an older Grady myself (see my morning post). One thing it needs though, fuel tanks! I've done this job before several times, BUT not on a nice boat with nice decks, hope there's plywood under the glass decks, cause that's how repair job will have to be done. Nice boats though......

Re: 1980 grady white

I own a Grady 24 Offshore. It is a 1984 and I bought it is 1994 with 500 hours on the engine. I've had to replace the power plant (1995) but still have the original outdrive. I've not had any issues with the fuel tank. Had to replace the hydraulic piston that is used for power assist steering. The seal on the outdrive came off this season and water got into the lower unit so it needs to be repaired. Other than that the Grady is a very seaworthy boat. I moor it on Cape Cod and fish in the Atlantic. I plan to keep this boat a few more years and then will buy another Grady.

Capt Bass,

I have a 1986 GW Offshore with a mercruiser sterndrive that was replaced in 2002. I moore the boat in NJ and always seem to have some water in the bilge. Have you had any problems with water in the bilge?
