1980 johnson 15 horse idle problem

i have a 1980 johnson 15 horse model j15rcsd , i cant idle it up in neutral as soon as i put it in forward or reverse i can twist the grip as fast as i want, but in neutral cannot turn the throttle. why and how do i fix this any adjustments i can make , or is this normal

It sounds like the idle set screw is turned all the way in to keep it running. Try adjusting the carb idle needle, and stop screw.

That's because it has a neutral stop that only let's ya' take the throttle up so far. Keeps a person from overreving in neutral. Normal ops for your engine. Is there a problem with the idle in neutral?

RJ....we thinkin' about the same thing in different ways or did we each read the post together in a different way?

no but when engine is cold it helps to rev it alittle in neutral til it warms up i use this all winter and a friend has a motor like mine but two years newer and he can rev as high as he wants in neutral
